They don't care about pizza anymore because the US redefined what pizza is. True Italian pizza is pizza made with what they had to work with in Italy (read: not much) so it's recipe is more reserved by comparison. Pizza made by Italian migrants in the US was covered in cheese and toppings with a thick crust because the ingredients were cheap and plentiful in the US, something the migrants hadn't had access to before and which they took full advantage of. Now decades down the line US pizza is the global standard
