The Spanish Inquisition was a cornerstone of human rights. The Church actually have some sort of due process to the accused, unlike the civil authorities of the time. It also provided anyone accused with the opportunity to repent and be free, as well as alternative punishments, such as praying the Rosary, give alms to the poor, fast, etc. The only people executed were the ones who refused to repent. And they were also fed by the church if they were in prison, unlike the prisoners of the state.
