Most of the crops discovered through colonialism of the Americas were selectively bred by Europeans into the worthwhile and useful crops we know today. Should these crops be considered European in origin because they share so little in common with the early American ancestors?

Europeans didn't understand nixtamalization and tried to grow corn in Europe without processing it correctly. So a bunch of people ended up dying of niacin deficiencies as a result.

There’s actually much evidence proving some Indian chili peppers are native to India.

Sure if you ignore all the work Americans did prior like making corn bigger than a thumb and all the nightshade derived plants less poisonous.

I've seen this talking point too from Indian nationalists. There are a few Indian youtube vids about some chilis being native to India. It's hogwash but it's funny to hear. Also interesting is how much new world crops have come to dominate Indian cooking while pushing out of diet the tons of odd and barely known native crops that Indians ate for thousands of years. Apparently in the remote parts, the ancient Indian crops still dominate the cuisine. Indian food history is fascinating.

New world crops were domesticated by Native Americans thousands of years before Europeans arrived.
