I once called some pizza place to make an order (this was just before every junk food establishment had a mobile app) and was redirected to what was clearly a call center in Africa. No joke I can corroborate. I worked at a Domino’s for a few years through college up until a year ago, and we unironically outsource most of our phone orders to poos, as it’s cheaper to have them do it than hire more of us Americans to the store. And yes, the phone bot makes you listen to an ad for the app and a couple side dishes for a good 15 seconds before it even begins ringing the phone on our end. It’s brutal, but they do it to push you towards online self service portals to make you do the work instead of a paid employee.

You’re using quotations wrong. I said they’re making you do the work instead of paid employees, which is factual, and they have financial incentive to do so. I’m not saying we should waste people’s time on the phone when the technology exists to make that obsolete, but the fact is they’re outsourcing that work to Indians and pushing to eliminate the human factor altogether. My only real gripe with this is the aggressive pushing of extra product they barrage you with on their online app, as they can’t get away with getting an employee to upsell you 5 times in a call, but they literally do so on the Domino’s website. I call up pizza places instead of putting in online orders whenever I'm away from home. It's always seemed easier to me to look up the number real quick than find what I want in the menu, dodge pop ups, and enter all my payment information on a phone screen. If I'm driving into town and want to place an order, calling is obviously better.
