New Coke. There wasn't a conspiracy to get people to crave the original formula, Coca-Cola just fucked up.

To be fair, not many people gave a shit, but the ones who did were ready to throw hands over it. Hilariously, this actually came up during their testing of New Coke. One ten person test group reported that everyone liked the new formula, however, when the test subjects were told that the old formula was going away for the new formula one test subject lost his shit hard about it. Coca-Cola should have noted that kind of strong reaction.
