So what happens between the transition from childhood to adulthood that makes Chef Boyardee, Spaghettio, etc type canned pastas go from tasting delicious to tasting like vomit?

And why despite them tasting like vomit in adulthood, are they still somehow pleasurable to eat once in a while at 3 AM without heating straight out of the can?

I get the Heinz ones and sometimes I'm really in the mood for that pasty salty sauce and clay-like meatballs. Delicious with some chili flakes.

Chef Boy-Artie has kind of a funky flavor to me

With spaghettios you are probably being stupid and buying original and not the meatball variety. The original flavor has cheese sauce and it's always been gross, most people just don't realize their parents got them the meatball version or ever think to read the can and realize the original flavor is fucking stupid and meatballs is an entirely different sauce. Everyone just assumes it's the same but with meatballs added, but it's completely different because it isn't the nasty ass cheese tomato sauce and is just a psuedo marinara.

They were never delicious to me, likely because my parents raised me on a varied diet since infancy. I never understood the meme in old cartoons about kids not liking vegetables until I met Americans so my guess is exactly what I said: a varied diet leads you to understand that certain things are awful and always have been.

This.
Try this brand of spaghetti-o's, they're twice the price at like $3, but they're a lot closer to what canned pasta used to be like 30 years ago. Pasta is firm, sauce is flavorful and not too sweet.

The one big difference I've noticed is the grade of beef in canned pasta products has gotten considerably worse. I remember distinctly the little chewy bits of beef in beef-a-roni being actual ground beef, now they're hard little bits of chipped beef like you'd have in army-style shit on a shingle. Also the filling of the ravioli is now some unidentifiable paste, whereas before the entire filling could be removed in one piece like a mini patty. Same goes for the meatballs, they're just dogfood mush now, they used to be bouncy and chewy like little bits of Italian sausage.

Your tastebuds refine and overly sugary foods start to taste bad.
>And why despite them tasting like vomit in adulthood, are they still somehow pleasurable to eat once in a while at 3 AM without heating straight out of the can?
Nostalgia mixed with laziness. At 3 am you want a comfort food. Something familiar and something you don't need to really cook.

1. your brain as well as your actual physical tastebuds develop over time, when you are younger you have a stronger instinctual draw to sweet over anything else

2. it was always shit

3. The recipe has also definitely changed over the years, making it even more shit than it was then. You aren't eating the same product.
