I was drinking Pepsi for years and preferring it to Coke but yesterday for some reason, I had a taste epiphany and now I find Pepsi kind of gross and I like coke a lot more now. Has that ever happened to you?

sort of
not sure why but one day I realized pepsi was so much sweeter than all other colas
same happened with wendy's hamburger buns
faygo cola hits just right though
also if there was soda in the house as a kid, it was pepsi

Opposite for me, over the years I found coke to be cloyingly sweet while Pepsi is more refreshing. I think Pepsi might be more carbonated or some, it's basically the same ingredients but these days it seems like coke in a can is just syrup with a little bit of carbonation.

All cola has an undernote of "tutti-frutti" or "bubble gum", it's more noticeable in off-brand colas like sam's cola or something. I find that that particular aromatic note is stronger in pepsi than coca-cola, which can give the impression that it is sweeter. Coca-Cola has a slightly more spicy or acidic aroma, probably a higher proportion of citrus and clove oil.
That being said, the two brands are 95% identical in their original full-sugar formulation. Where the difference is most palpable is in their diet soda products.
Diet coke is much lighter in texture and has a bright, delicate nose of palm leaves or woodruff. Diet pepsi is much darker and thicker textured, more reminiscent of caramel or roasted nuts.

from one preference to now, literally gross? Probably a skunky old can or bottle. Might have been spoiled.

I prefer Coke to Pepsi, but I actually think store brand Publix tastes better as a mixer. I also think Coke Zero tastes more cinnamony, and refreshing. So, my palate picks up nuances of flavors, but I wouldn't call any of them gross if I actually like cola flavor.
