Now's your chance to make some of those Korean recipes that have all the measurements in grams!
Seriously, what's with that? I remember a recipe that involved tomato sauce and it was in grams. What the hell?

Scales are more common in home kitchens outside of the USA. Only bakers really seem to get them in the USA. They're pretty handy for regular cooking too though, they should be seen as standard equipment.

For me it's the humble escali. I've worked in kitchens most of my life and nothing beats it in terms of accuracy, utility, durability and price.

I wish all recipes were by weight
it's so annoying using spoons for sticky ingredients

btw I saw some video with ethan whatever owski and he pronounced tare as tah ray, like it's japanese or something. made me cringe

Sometimes I like to just weigh already cooked food to see how much it actually weighs. Nice for calorie/macro counting, too. You'd be surprised how dense a good chicken breast can be.

i never understand why recipes in 2025 still use volumetric measurements like tbsp / tsp

my own recipes are all written in grams
even for dried herbs / spices
my scale is accurate to 0.01g if you weigh something below 100g

Breadmaking becomes much nicer with a kitchen scale you bother using, especially recipes that end with many smaller rolls.

I use it for measuring pasta and flour.

or just one

if you can measure accurately down to 0.1g
you can scale salt, yeast and spices down for just a single burger bun, cinnamon role etc.

>it's so annoying using spoons for sticky ingredients
If you sprtiz some cooking spray on your spoon and wipe it off with a paper towel (so that leaves an invisible residue) it helps when spooning out sticky ingredients like honey.

Cookies and cake layers too as the former guarantees they all bake at the same rate and the latter for layers of identical thickness for stacking.

Yeah I did this not too long ago for a night when we were doing chicken sandwiches. Most recipes just assume you want to feed 8 and homemade bread does not have a good shelf life so if it's not something I'll definitely be finishing off within 24 hours I will try to scale down.

that sounds really tedious & wasteful just to avoid a kitchen scale...
