It's great. It's a salad that holds up better than lettuce. You can have it with all different kinds of dressings, not just sweet mayonnaise sauces. It's good with onion and bacon and vinaigrette. It's good warmed. There are all different kinds with different shredded ingredients and herbs. I've had it with broken, half crunchy ramen noodles in it. I've had soupy gross slaws and amazing crisp slaws.
As a child I really hated it but over the years, especially after making it myself, I really grew to love it.
Asian slaws with sesame chili oil and rice wine dressings are good. Topped with fried rice noodles. Even the one in your picture can be good. The worst type would be like KFC or places that make it with confetti cabbage.
Give it a chance. If you're really trashy just bridge the gap by eating a salad of shredded iceberg and ranch, then switch to slaw cabbage and ranch, then bRanch out from there. lol

Vinegar based slaw only.
Anyone who makes it with mayonnaise needs shooting, itโ€™s on par with plebeians who put cheese in lasagne.

The good stuff is called "summer slaw" and includes tomatoes. Seriously the tomatoes make it AMAZING. Basically just make/buy any that looks like picrel.
Cole slaw is easy to fuck up but I got slaw from a barbeque food truck once and they add tomatoes and it's just infinitely better. Makes it taste refreshing and hearty.

When I eat a salad, I don't want the entire thing slathered with sweet and sour sauce. A good one to me is when a reasonable amount is mixed into the veggies. That's my issue with store coleslaw seems to be that their main idea is to douse the entire salad so every single veggie is coated in sauce. It's almost def better to make your own coleslaw. Start with the cliche veggie base, which are just mid on their own raw, then make your own sauce and pour in as much as you wish. Doesn't have to be mayo based, can be any you want.

You know how if you took a fantastic hot roast beef sandwich and put into it a log of shit, it wouldn't be a middle ground of good-and-bad, it would just be inedible garbage? Yeah, same thing when you take wonderful mayonnaise and add to it disgusting flavorless dirt and bug infested rabbit food.

It shouldn't be drowned in mayo then. The vinegar based ones are much better.

If you hang out with people from certain cultural backgrounds then coleslaw becomes the default salad and it's great. I never want to eat another horrible White American iceberg lettuce salad made by somebody's obese Aunt Barb who couldn't be bothered to bring a real dish to the potluck.

It's just a salad made with cabbage instead of lettuce or spinach. Seriously, I don't get why it grosses so many people out. Make it yourself so you can balance the flavours if you find storebought coleslaw too sweet or creamy or whatever. I know that some are drenched in mayo and that can be kind of gross, but it doesn't have to be that way. It doesn't even even need to have mayo at all if you don't like it, although I like a little bit.

Yeah. An easy dressing is just mayo and any brine in the fridge. Pickles, pickled jalapenos, olives. Or you can mix some Italian dressing with mayo. Slaw is super versatile and easy and a head of cabbage lasts weeks.
