Rate my beef stew and share your beef stories trials and tribulations.

This weekend's batch has barley and I really took my time with this one, it's tender as hell. Also a pinch of whole peppercorns means every now and then you have a nice surprise when you bite into one of the tender corns

Looks hearty/10
Dunno how anyone can struggle with stew though. Like one of the easiest things to make that maximizes enjoyment

Sometimes, I try to do things
And it just doesn't work out the way I want it to
And I get real frustrated
And like, I try hard to do it
And I like, take my time, but it just doesn't work out the way I want it to
It's like I concentrate on it real hard
But it just doesn't work out
And everything I do and everything I try
It never turns out
It's like, I need time to figure these things out

sometimes things get fucked up or it burns to the bottom of the pot or something. last time I posted stew some anon berated me for this or that, so I guess it's not automatically simple

it's a low skill floor dish for sure, although if you don't know what you're doing it's easy to make a stew bland. the expression of skill is how much depth of flavour you can achieve. which is something you can't really judge by a picture, so it's hard to rate this. one thing I will say is it looks too thin for my taste, I prefer my stew to have a thicker consistency. this is almost like soup. other than that it looks fine, but again, it's really about how it tastes.

it looks like it's got potatoes in there. My mom would make some bomb ass stew where the before and after she adds the potatoes were magic. Idk, I have faith in starches - I'd put my money on it being good stew consistency, but maybe he put it in last minute, dunno

I'm just going by what I can see in the picture. looks watery. it's hard to tell much from a picture though.

I want to make beef and barley stew but I usually put potato in my beef stew but double starch seems excessive. should I just make it with barley and carrots and onions?

just use less potato if you think it might be a problem do add barley. my stu has lots of potato and barley in it and it's quite nice, the texture of barley goes so well with the rest of it. one less potato and an ounce of barley would make sense.

also beef stew is very starchy anyway, the broth is basically flour gravy so barley and potatoes are both right at home

it's thicker than it looks, but also it's hard to know much the flour and barley are going to clot the broth. by tomorrow it'll be finished thickening
