A rich custard highly flavoured with almonds gives the best general idea of it, but there are occasional wafts of flavour that call to mind cream-cheese, onion-sauce, sherry-wine, and other incongruous dishes

If Durian was the name of the band, the album would be:
Soft, rotting onions and other hot summer garbage odors.

Lies.
>The durian's aroma is an irresistible, sweet cascade of luscious custard and vibrant tropical fruit, laced with a seductive, musky allure that enchants the senses. Its flavor is a sumptuous, velvety embrace, exploding with creamy vanilla, juicy mango, and decadent caramel-toffee, delivering a profoundly yummy, melt-in-your-mouth ecstasy that leaves you craving more.

Yeah, we get the bit. You're the contrarian defending durian knowing damned well that 99% of people are revolted by it. Even people who live in areas/cultures where it grows don't like it. You're very clever.

One of the most delicious thing about Durian is the creamy texture, having it as candy, especially hard candy, sound ick. You should try it as the filling of a puff pastry, some Chinese restaurant or bakery have that.

Durian are high in copper which is very good for you especially you're indulging in a high zinc diet or supplementing zinc as it depletes copper

I always hated the smell and refused to try durian, but one time in Thailand I was dared to try a durian icecream and I loved it! Now I also love durian. Especially if it's super cold - it tastes like frozen custard icecream

I've heard from the jungle asians that duriansy taste good when they're fresh, and most grocery store durians are frozen before fully ripening which makes them stink worse

I find durian fascinating and not altogether unenjoyable. I would be interested to explore it further, perhaps to attend a tasting with multiple contrasting varieties, which I've been told may have strikingly different aromas and flavors.
Some are more sour like a mango, some are more creamy like a banana, some taste of caramel or English toffee, and there are varieties that have zero savory pungency whatsoever, and others that taste like garlic and wasabi.

adding to the pro durian team. I had it in thailand and thought the fresh stuff tasted and smelled good. As it got more ripe the pungent oniony flavor got more intense, but still tasted fine, kind of like mashed tropical sweet potato with caramelized onions. I also had an ice cream bar that was oniony to the point that it was almost like an armpit, and I burped up that flavor for several hours. There are better fruits, but if you can get fresh stuff itโ€™s worth it

The one I had in Indonesia smelled like rotting garbage and tasted like how shit smells, no exaggeration. I've tried lots of weird foods and at the very least will swallow the first bite even if I'm not going to eat any more, but I had to spit it out almost immediately. Some of you will probably say I must have got a bad one but I was sharing it with the Indonesians I was staying with and they were eating it with pure delight.
I think it only tastes good if you have brown genes or something.

Smells like unwashed feet that have just come out of sweat drenched socks.

The flavor is a mixed fucking bag.
The overall profile tastes like onions and mango with an admittedly very nice sweet profile I haven't encountered anywhere else.
Properly ripe durian has the consistency of softened cream cheese.

All in all, the flavor isn't as nauseating as people claim but it does have a strong stench that many can't overcome. I get it, but growing up in the deep south where chtlins being cooked can make a home smell like pig shit, I learned to block out smell over flavor decades ago.
