Real teriyaki is mirin + soy sauce based. Depending on the variant it will have ginger, garlic, onion, and potentially sesame seed. Thickeners and sugar sources might be added.

Hacks use pineapple juice or vinegar instead of mirin. These are incorrect and why all the competitors suck ass. It makes a vastly poorer quality sauce. If it says vinegar or pineapple juice, steer clear. It's not good.

Kikkoman tends to have shit shortcut brands that use pineapple or vinegar for retarded americans to spend money on. Got to be careful with them.

It's pretty easy to make at home though. I learned how because at the time there was no good ones on the market, but at least now you can usually find 1-2 real ones.
