They were a overstimulated, hyper realistic version of the 50's. Just like a couple years back, people tried to reimagine the 80's/early 90's but it ended up being just a shitty current version.

The long and short of it is the technological advancements and a positive shift in global relations. I'm a late Gen X, so it's quite easy for me to view the time through rose tinted specs, but the difference in mood was tangible in comparison to the current time without any nostalgic bias. Part of that is collective naivety, once you get world news, clickbait, ragebait and (most devastatingly) the opinion of each and every retard around the world who shouts the loudest on social media then everything becomes worse.
