Anyone here have a recommendation for decent beans in the city, preferably not at astronomical cost?

I used to get Joe because they're everywhere and the beans were good enough but the last 2 bags I got of Joe's actual Joe branded beans were absolute garbage, I don't know wtf happened. So I stopped getting that. The Joe Pro shop around 20th street (?) has a lot of hipstered up beans from allegedly respectable roasters that are hard to find anywhere else, so if you live or work near there, that might be good, but if you're price sensitive it may not be what you're after. I'm a filthy yuppie so I am relatively price insensitive as long as the coffee is good.

So since Joe went to shit I just order from Southdown on Long Island which has always been good even though I have to wait a day or two and their bags (like the actual things that they put the coffee in) are some of the stupidest worst designed coffee bags ever. The beans (or roasts, not really sure) have always been really good, I just sometimes lose track of my supply and you can't just walk down the block and buy it like you can with most of the actual local spots.

There's also Devocion which I thought was pretty good but I've heard hipsters disparage it. And Grumpy which I try to avoid because they sell it at Whole Foods now so it means they sold out.

Southdown is definitely on the upper end of what I'd like to pay, but ty for mentioning it regardless, I'll put it on the list.

Any of you tried Baruir's coffee? See consistently positive mentions of it online.

Never heard of it but judging by the pics it's 2nd wave, so I'm guessing overroasted greasy beans on the verge of rancidity and they probably get offended if you ask them for a roast date, like porto rico in the west village which I assume is still in business. I might be being too harsh but I know this look.

It's nice to support old timey places like that for nostalgia and neighborhood character, but the coffee world has moved on.

The employee working for the old man looks cute though, I bet he is happy to have a healthy energetic young lady there who can do all the hard tasks without breaking a sweat (and if she did sweat a little I'm sure no one would mind).
