The garbage disposal in my apartment exploded and dumped dirty water all over my sink cabinet and kitchen floor yesterday.
I think I'm going to start putting grease in the trash.

When I become a homeowner and it does become my problem, what can I do to mitigate the issue? Currently in my apartment once a week I will boil a large pot of water and pour it directly down the sink, would something like that be helpful? Or do I need to use a true caustic solution to dissolve the fats away?

hot water will melt it which just makes it easier for it to stick to the pipes.
you should be using cold water so the fat will harden and be more likely to be flushed out with the water
