when you think about it this describes many nations that experienced extreme poverty such a china, india, mexico and a lot of africa. Rice is always the side and the main dish is a stew of chicken/lamb/beef/pork/fish/beans and meals are either served with dough fried in oil or lard or the fried dough is eaten in between meals
i think thats what society defaults to even tho somr countries use potatoes instead of fried dough bbut then again potatoes were also used to stretch flour
