Theres a thicket of wild black raspberries near me that are peaking. Normally I donโ€™t mess with berries but a lady that was harvesting them the other day turned me onto these little jokers.

What other wild plants and mushrooms should I be on the lookout for?

Whatever you do, don't forage this little gem: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Echinococcus_multilocularis.
For mushrooms get a decent book and join a mushroom club. Don't tell them you want to eat mushrooms and they'll show you everything, where and when.
PlantNet is really good and the only reason I ever use my smartphone. There are plenty of herbs you can use in the kitchen: chervil, tansy, sorrel, marjoram, mint. Depends a bit on where you live.

I used to have a grove of secret apples I found deep in the woods all huddled around a 350yr old stone wall. Probably leftovers from the old farm that burned down around 1740. Completely impassable, thick brush and thorns tearing at every angle, but I used to carry a stepladder out and harvest bags of them around August-Sept. Made great pies

a couple annoying things happened. that land on the other side of the stone wall has been farmland since around 1690, and it's several hundred acres much of which has been used as a hayfield for the last 100 or so years. the owners apparently fell behind in their taxes and the greasy never-worked-a-day-in-their-life offspring of literal billionaires bought all ~400 acres simply by paying the tax lien of $200k. Nobody knew, my family would have bought it in an instant but nobody fucking knew.

Anyway, they built a stucco mcmansion and put solar powered cameras all throughout their forest and perimeter, and bulldozed much of everything on their side of the stone wall.

Devastating as that big hill and field were the endless dream playland of my childhood and now the worst people on the planet overlook the whole town from their particleboard shithole and dozens of cameras peering out.

they would have mortgaged the property anon. acreage is going for $20k-$50k an acre around that town and buying 400 acres for $200k is an extremely wise investment. the bank would happily grant a mortgage because we could have sold 20 acres along the road or pond for much more than $200k and still had over 350 acres of wonderland

If you already own a house or property the bank is much much more willing to loan you more money to buy land, as they know you are good for it and if you don't pay, well there is all that property you already own to make up the difference.

my pairnts aren't rich anon. my mother retired recently and my dad's in his early 70s still working. they bought all their land and built their house for $30k because that's how cheap life was, and that shit towne was, in 1980. lucky for them, but there is nothing rich in their lives in terms of their bank accounts or luxuries they just have a property that was worth hanging onto for some decades.

Also we used to have about an acre of raspbreeze and blackbreeze, my brother and I would spend like a week straight harvesting buckets of them, but the glad they all grew in eventually grew over with beech and dogwood
