The rise in popularity of the air fryers is the most absurd thing I have ever witnessed.

It's literally a fan oven, but it's smaller and goes on your kitchen countertop.

All kitchens already have a fan oven, but people are going crazy over one that is smaller and takes up more of your kitchen space.

People are so fucking dumb it's unreal.

My mom bought an air fryer when they were first coming out, way before the trend. We made fries and they were unbelievably crispy, they were indistinguishable from fried.
Fast forward 8 years and now everyone has them but they seem to suck now, the food comes out like it was cooked in an oven.
It might just be the rose tint but I swear air fryers used to better, the food actually seemed fried.

A lot of "air fryers" that are on the market now are just toaster ovens/counter top convection ovens that they have changed the packaging of to get on the trend. Here's an example- this is a halogen oven model I have. I needed to buy one recently because the one I'd had for five or so years had broken. It turns out they are now slapping the "air fryer" label onto them, despite them never having been marketed as such until now.

Now, all air fryers are just convection ovens at the end of the day, but the thing that used to set them apart was the very high temps and extremely quick fan speeds that meant you could almost simulate actual deep frying. Now, it is just a trendy label, because I guess there are no standards as to what you can sell as an "air fryer".

what if someone wants to cook a single porition but doesn't want it to be a soggy mess cooked in a microwave. you can have families that don't all eat at the same time, or maybe only 1 person in home and they don't want to heat the entire oven. air fryer has a use purpose that sits between an oven and a microwave. it's small and efficient like a microwave but cooks like an oven.

If you are looking for an air fryer, I strongly suggest getting one with two compartments. This will allow you to cook the protein in one of them, and a side dish in the other simultaneously. Personally, I like the Cosori Turbo Power Pro. Its vertical design is perfect for small kitchens, and unlike the Ninja one it has the heating elements and fans on the top, achieving perfect results. Americans abstain, your pathetic 110V power plugs are barely enough to power even a single air fryer, never mind a double compartment one.

ERM.... IT'S 120V SWEETY....
In reality though higher voltage doesn't strictly mean more power. that air fryer (and most anything you have) can be ran on a 30A 120v outlet, you'd just need a bigger gauge wire.
There's not many appliances I can think of that use over 1800w anyways. That being said I'd still prefer to have 240v outlets.

lmao I use mine every single day, it's amazing. If I am cooking for more than two sure I'll use an oven. But I can now use the oven and the air fryer at the same time. There is no way to better reheat leftovers. You can put frozen food in the combo versions and they cycle microwaving/convection to quickly defrost and cook whatever food without it turning tough. Absolutely goated piece of hardware. I can only imagine the people against it are so poor they don't have any more room in their tiny kitchens to store another appliance..

I had one of these before I sold my house and downsized considerably. Got rid of it along with a lot of excess shit.
It WAS good for salmon and steaks, I never used it to cook frozen stuff like nuggies or fries, if I wanted that there was a perfectly good Wendy's just down the road.

My main concern is a mostly plastic appliance that's 400ยฐ in less than a square foot of space. After a few uses it would smoke, A LOT. Don't trust it, same as I no longer trust seafood boil bags or oven turkey bags. I'm done using plastic in my cooking. Glass, wood, and steel only, it was good enough for my forebears, it's good enough for me. Fuck all this trendy shit

This one is pretty much the immediate ancestor of the air fryer. Its functioning principle is identical. Such halogen ovens were super common 20 or so years ago.
Air fryers replaced them primarily due to 1) convenience (cleaning that big glass bowl is a bitch, and some are too big for dishwashers); 2) speed (air fryers "fry" faster due to smaller volume, meaning quicker heating, and higher airflow, meaning consistently higher temperature); 3) size (most people don't need a full-size halogen over's capacity anymore).

>All kitchens have a fan oven
Convection ovens are rare in the USA.
Conventional ovens are the norm, be they gas or electric.

A countertop oven or air fryer is still useful because they don't draw as much power, heat up faster, and don't warm your house as much as using a full sized oven.

Think they never took off because they were pretty expensive compared to conventional ovens and they were mainly electric. While electric ovens and ranges are common now, gas stoves and burners were the standard for pretty much anybody with a house until well into the 80s and you don't just flip from gas to electric overnight, so it was boomers getting new homes and Gen Xers mainly changing that up.

Even then pretty much 100% of recipes were built with conventional ovens in mind and you got a change cook times and temps a bit for convection ovens.

The more baffling invention was definitely the very short lived refrigerated oven. The concept was you prepped your meal, put in an oven that stayed refrigerated until time to cook, then it got hot using convection, cooked the food, then kept it warm all based on timers.

Pitched as an item for working moms or some shit. It failed spectacularly because it was twice the price of a bad ass oven and if you had that kind of cash you were just eating out constantly or the wife was a stay at home mom anyway.

I agree. OP is as dumb as a fucking bag of rocks.

My oven does not have a fucking fan. It even claims to be "convection" like you retards spam. It will not render ANY fried food I place into it crispy. It is just a hot box to bake stuff in. Meanwhile, my air fryer DOES have a fan in it, that runs nonstop, to get shit nice and crispy. It works a real treat on frozen fries, tendies, egg rolls, fried shrimp, pretty much anything pre-fried and frozen.

Even better is I got a combo one, so it's a nuke box, mini oven, and air fryer. So no counter space wasted. That sucker is great for warming fast food that got cold.

>>21474407
Because it is due to no preheat time. I have to wait minutes for oven preheat. Air fryer "says" you should, but fuck that food goes right in and it works. That's many minutes of my time saved. Cost and lack of interest. Americans are too goyslop indoctrinated to cook at home, the cooktop is just for looks. Hence why all the cooktops are sleek glass designs with lines printed on them, and old ass tech under the hood.

I mean fuck the original 20s coil shit that used bimetallic strips is still around today, and that is still in use for IR tops. Only recently with the inductor cooktops has ACTUAL innovation happened (like temp control), and that hasn't stopped them from scamming people with less copper in them than advertised.

You would think someone would have merged all the cooking tech into one big device. But nope.

To be fair, my range does have a wok holder and griddle attachment. But that is as advanced as it comes.
