I have found that kokuho rose rice, when rinsed until water is clear, drained, and cooked in a instant pot pressure cooker with a 1:1 rice:water ratio, has the exact same taste, scent, and texture as a side of white rice from an american japanese restaurant.

You can thank me later.

It only costs a few extra dollars per 10 pounds than comparable sushi rice brands at an asian grocer.
You can make rinsing extremely easy by getting the steamer basket with handle accessory for the instant pot and just dunking the rice in and out of the pot full of water.
The finger test is bullshit

You like your rice with extra arsenic, lead, and cadmium? California is about the only place in the Americas where you can grow rice without contamination by heavy metals. Asian and Indian rices are also fucked.

if you are eating rice you're probably already measuring how much you're going to cook anyways, it takes no extra effort, this isn't some stuff like "don't spice things by eye" or "measure the amount of oil you use militantly"
>>21474960
yeah okay bro i'll just pay like $10 for 2 pounds of rice with weevils that'll infest my entire cupboard
>>21474971
i have only made one, 2-cup-dry-rice batch of it after the dozens of trying out different brands over the years (adjusting cooking time and steam release time), so the results may vary.
The rice will feel sort of overwatered/overcooked right after releasing the pressure, but if you immediately break it up and scrape it off the bottom of the pot, it seems to like un-gooify and taste like firm, "resturant quality" rice by the time you serve it.
The model of instant pot I use is a IP-DUO, I use the default rice setting that usually cooks for 12 minutes, but it has some weird auto sense feature, and I release the pressure immediatley.
I used to have a DUO EVO PLUS that broke and I'd use the high pressure rice setting, set it for like 1-2 minutes of cook time, and then let it sit after it finished for 5-7 minutes before releasing the pressure. I don't know how this changes for other models.

>but it has some weird auto sense feature, and I release the pressure immediatley.
I meant I release the pressure immediately as the pot chimes that it's done.
Sorry, I just made the best home-cooked white rice in my life after years of trying to crack it, and I had to poast this shit as soon as possible.

I've come here to be berated and shit upon and I don't fucking care.

I have moved a lot and thus haven't had a rice cooker for quite a longtime, and I didn't want to buy one because they take up so much space and are kind of a unitasker, and then I saw these this with really good ratings. Decided even if it's shit for rice it's still a useful microwave and storage vessel, so I bought it.

Fucking amazing rice every time and super easy. I'll never get an electric rice cookiรฉr again. They always burn the bottom of the rice anyway, this thing doesn't

i'll have to try this some time, i'm pretty sure this is fairly common and even the OG rice eaters (asians) use this stuff all the time
but as for rice cookers being a unitasker, digital pressure cookers with a billion features usually do rice very well and you can use them to make stews, saute stuff, sauces, sous vide, roasts, etc. which you usually cant do in a microwave. i haven't owned a rice-only cooker in like 10 years

seems like you could save even more space by ditching a few of the pots, the microwave rice thing, and your slow cooker and just getting an up-to-date pressure cooker instead.
the pressure cooker is also insane for making homemade stocks. cuts the cooking time literally from like 6-12 hours down to 1 or 2

Today I made some Cajun ricin beans using rice cooked in >>21475010

It has a nice variety of beans, diced smokey bacon, diced chicken breast, diced pickled chillis which have a wonderful tangy zip to them. was going to add diced ham because it's so delicious with cajun spice but the protein/rice/beans balance was already going out of whack. would have been extra ca$h with some pRons but I didn't have any today. This is leftover and reheated so looks a bit drab but I didn't get a photo earlier.

7/10, not my best batch but very comฦ’y

Smart boy. The only difference between a $200 and $500 rice cooker is just the pressure function either ways. The micom and induction stuff is useless once you got pressure. I'd say the default rice settings on those instant pots aren't that great though, and you can do better experimenting with manual cook/release times, as well as water to rice ratio depending on release.
>>21477751
If your idea of "Chinese restuarant" is Panda Express or the sketchy but cheap place on the corner that used to be a Pizza Hut then you'd be mostly correct.
>>21476131
Kokuho Yellow is basically the closest you'll get to actual Chinese short/medium grain rice. Red is pretty much Japanese rice.

Why do you assume people who choose to use a rice cooker are somehow incapable of cooking rice in any other way?

I use a rice cooker because it's consistent, hands off, and lets me soak rice overnight and be cooked and ready for me in the morning, or cook a large batch for dinner and leave the rest in the rice cooker overnight to be used for breakfast/lunch the next day.
