Who, or what, is buying and drinking the Moxie?

"Root beer" if you had to pick one, but don't get the impression that it's some rare artisanal find, it's just more corn syrup garbage manufactured by The Coca-Cola Company.

As internet culture grew, so did indie/contrarian culture

My grandpa used to drink it. There's been a single can of diet Moxie in my aunt's pantry for easily 7 years, going back to his death. I just think it's funny that the taste is so depressing that not a single person - out of the 15 or so who are constantly in and out of that house - has ever thought about touching it. I always check to see if it's still there when I visit.

Moxie isn't a common drink in California outside of specialty shops/candy stores, but every time I saw some kid buy it led to the same look of disgust while they walked away with their parents. There was only ever one father I'd seen who was actually willing to tell his kid that it straight up tasted like shit.

I liken it to 1 part root beer + 1 part Dr. Pepper + a generous splash of bitters. It's not a perfect description but it's in that ballpark. The first time I tried it I didn't like it much but coming back to it 10 years later it's really good and I make a special trip to Cracker Barrel to get some occasionally.
