Is Japanese beer as good as they say, or is it just a めめ?

I wouldn't call it bad, but like most beer in asia it tends to be basically all fairly bog standard "easy drinking lager". Generally not a lot of interesting flavor profile. Asahi is basically just fizzy water. Beer all over asia mostly arr taste the same and it usually does not matter what brand you pick

Some people will argue that sapporo is the best or whatever but idk man it really doesnt taste like much

the commercial scale adjunct stuff is the same as anywhere else.
sapporo is brewed in america and canada, even.

they have a craft beer scene but you're not going to get any of it overseas.

It's okay. Light lagers. Maybe a bit more full-bodied than Budweiser or something. The stuff you want is right next to the beer though.

This shit will put you on the ground quickly. The can designs are a little different now (old ones are better) but I'm too lazy to take a pic.

It's like any other middle to high income country that isn't in central europe or US/Can. There's a lot of macro which is ok, and there's a growing "craft brew" scene which is invariably pretty expensive but often outrageously good if you aren't price sensitive.

Mexican is a decent analogy though Mexican craft beer is harder to obtain outside of Mexico compared to Japanese, probably because normgroids are more open to the idea that Japan could make a half decent beer, whereas the average normgroid sees Mexico as nothing but mud huts, tequila, and cartels and would simply laugh if someone suggested a Mexican beer that didn't come in at $9 for a 24-pack.

Maybe if you are a small oriental that naturally has issues metabolizing alcohol.

I had plenty of strong zeros on my trips and I find I always need to buy a liquor with it.

Sapporo brewed by Stone in San Diego is better than Sapporo brewed in Japan. Sapporo brewed in Canada is among the worst beers I've ever tasted and has a distinct dish soap flavor.
Other than good Sapporo, they all get mogged by Tsingtao.

Have you had the ones they sell in Japan or just the Western versions? I'm not sure I'd call the Japanese ones "good" but IMO they've got quite a bit more character than the Western versions, some remind me of a "full-strength" American lager (Coors Banquet, PBR, etc.) while the ones you get in the US are more like a light beer. I liked Suntory the best of the bunch, shame it's so hard to get outside Japan because I might actually buy it if they sold it in the US, it'd be a decent alternative to the American macros.

I like the stuff that's brewed in Japan, but the Sapporo brewed in Canada is fucked up for some reason. Overall though it's still very middle of the road whatever beer. Goes good with food when you want beer, but it's not a magical experience.

Asahi being so light is why I enjoy it. Most of the time I'm not using air conditioning and want food or beverages that aren't super heavy (if it's a heavy greasy meal, a light drink or beer offsets it)

Not into tasting alcohol or being drunk all the time, it satisfies

yebisu>orion>sapporo>kirin>suntory>asahi(asahi better outside of japan though). all kinda mid though but there are some more IPAs and ales and stuff you can find, and smaller craft breweries, but the regular cheap mass produced beer in japan is definitely better than the USA or canada, worse than most of europe

Wait, the "Premium Malt's?" I moved out of the LA area in January and had never seen it in a Japanese supermarket, they had the non-alcoholic stuff and did a pilot program thing where some restaurants had it on tap, but I never saw the classic stuff for sale at Mitsuwa or Tokyo Central.

Chu Hais are dangerous. You can't taste the alcohol in the regular ones, but just barely in the strongs.
Many hangovers with them.
Only thing more decieving is when soju is sold in the little six packs like I'm supposed to drink every bottle like it's a beer.

Pic related is my favorite Japanese beer. Nothing crazy, just a solid easy drinking beer.

no, the inability to answer a loaded question comes from having a working brain. I have a cabinet full of liqueur. i could drink myself to death easily right this moment. but I don't. know why towel head? because I have this thing called self control so that if I see a delicious drink mixed to perfection or a pretty womans hair I wont drink it if I shouldnt or rape the woman, or boy, or goat.

I'm sure you think that's very cool to mention, because our culture glorifies the abuse of that particular drug as an over-"correction" for a time period we're still lamenting as a mistake, 90 years of increasing degeneracy and libertine attitudes to other drugs later...

they started selling chu-hi in the US now but it doesn't really taste the same. and it's made with vodka, so in my state that means an extra $10 tax for a 6 pack at the checkout since the liquor tax is based on volume. pretty silly, but won't make that mistake again.
