Give me a russet over any of them. A McIntosh is amazing of eaten straight off the tree, but they go mealy and gross within a day of picking. Otherwise Granny Smith is the best one listed there.

I like tart apples much more than sweet apples and crisp texture is the next important thing so granny smith is just a good go to. A McIntosh is way better when it's fresh, but that's only for a few weeks out of the year. Russets are amazing but hardly ever grown these days. Most apple varieties now are way too sweet in my opinion.

For eating; Pixie Crunch Apple, designed by Oregon University. It's a hybrid that focuses on Tart, Sweet, and crisp flesh. It's not overly juicy but has a perfect balance of crisp to juice. Basically overflows your mouth with every bite.

For cooking; Granny Smith. Malic, Crisp, good body, it holds up the best in pies, cobblers, crumbles, and tarts. Pippin ain't got shit.

For chucking at people; Red Delicious. That's all they're good for.

Also for chucking at people; Crab apples. Those little fuckers are dense. They hurt like hell if you get some speed on em. One kid got his orbital broken.

This. My university ran a huge orchard and I used to work for a professor of pomology in the apple sales room. I could eat as many as I wanted from a bunch of varieties, and Macoun were far and away my favorite.

Honeycrisp makes my taco pop

Honeycrisp is grown too much now and not always in the best season. Jazz apples are a great runner up to them. Also I can get them in Japan. Japanese apples suck. Mushy, not very sweet, not much flavor... they're big, so they'd make good applesauce, if they weren't fucking $5 each.
Also Applerankings.com is funny and right about Japanese apples and red delicious.

its kind annoying when going to the store you need to know the exact apple variety you need to buy because the store doesnt tell you if its tart or sweet or whatever
like a recipe might say use specific kind, then you need to start taking your phone and googling about the varieties the store has
