Yeah you cut small pieces and then press them on the fork. You can make really tasty bites very easily that way. Small piece of meat, a bit of the veg, spread some mashed potatoes on top of it all. Boom you got an aqesome bite all thabks to using a knife and fork correctly.

It's how I was taught by my American mother. She had gone to an etiquette school or something when she was young. Old money from the South. She told me to always put down the knife (quietly on the edge of the plate) after cutting something and put my fork back into my right hand to eat the bite.

Under no circumstances were you ever to cut everything before hand, but each time you wanted a bite. It really slowed down eating, as dinner was supposed to be for polite conversation.

If you put your elbows on the table she'd smack you.

Sounds completely unnecessary. The thing you cut doesn’t have to be pushed on the fork because you already stabbed it with the fork and then the mashed potato or whatever is pushed on

you switch hands when the knife gets involved because the knife is the more important utensil.
you're very odd thinkers for not instinctively knowing this.

>The fork always goes in the left hand and the knife in the right. Holding either like a pen is unacceptable, as are stabbing techniques. The knife and fork should remain in the bottom third of the plate and never be laid down in the top half.

Yes, it's even worse than "not knowing", Americans for some reason do it completely arse backwards on purpose. I've heard the same that "proper" etiquette is to, like a spastic, put the knife down for every single bite and switch hands like an autistic child

The practice of using a fork in your left hand and knife in your right hand to cut your food and then swapping hands to hold the fork in your right hand to put it in your mouth actually originated in France. I guess the idea was that it forced you to eat more slowly and made dining more of a social occasion. During the 19th century, basically everything French was in vogue in the US. Even in old western saloons of the time, French cuisine was dominant everywhere. So we adopted this stupid idea from the frogs even though they were even getting sick of it themselves by that time and it just stuck around as part of our American etiquette for some reason. As an American, I just keep the fork in my left hand and the knife in my right hand through the meal. Nobody taught me one way or the other but that obviously makes the most fucking sense rather than juggling your silverware throughout your entire meal. My point is don't put this one on my fellow mutts because the French are the ones who came up with this nonsense in the first place.
