I just got a new non-stick pan (yes ideally you shouldnt use them I get it pls no bully) and on the instructions it says to rub it with oil after washing for first use. I don't get why. You season a cast iron to create a non-stick layer by heating it up almost empty to polymerize the oil which you obviously shouldn't do with non-stick and is not necessary since it already has a non-stick PTFE layer. I do use oil even with a non-stick pan but just on the bottom and the instructions sound like you should coat the entire pan. Anyone knows the purpose of this instruction?

Polymerized oil is literally plastic.

You got memed into wasting money on an obsolete pos, now you're going to get memed into frying on plastic.

Friction avoidance. The first use may cause hard food substance like bone to contact the nonstick surface and damage it. Since you greased the surface beforehand, it's less likely for high friction to occur and thereafter a slight film should form from your cooking and friction shouldn't be a problem. The properties of the nonstick coating improve after the first use.

Yeah, seems retarded.
I do cover the outsides and the bottom of the pan with some seasoning oil to prevent overheating those parts; because overheated teflon releases toxic fumes and I keep my fingers crossed that the seasoning layer will stop some of that.
Btw. don't ever use teflon without fats - "frying without oil" is pure charlatanry and - contrary to the commercial shticks - it's particularly unsafe with teflon pans.

I clearly meant consequences of overheating, that is releasing fumes. Fuck you. No, really, fuck you.

>whaoh, we have a scientist among us who no only tracks the advertisements of all new "non-sticks" surfaces - he carries experiments to check if they *ackhually* contain traces of harmful substances or not!!!
