Conclave
Thread for lovers of Vatican drama and genuine old man enjoyers. Bless the fans for making me aware of this movie with their flood of artworks.
Any other cardinal lovers present?

Visual Novel here: https://sneckoil.itch.io/delectatio-morosa

Fun fact: it seems like fans have collected more than 45k dollars with the fanzine for this movie.
Digital version still available here, for those interested: https://conclavezine.bigcartel.com/products
The money goes to charities.

Pope versions. Funny enough I imagined Tedesco's pope name to be Pius the first time I thought about it after his first movie minutes. I mean it makes sense, but still funny.

Every cardinal has the potential to evolve into a pope. They're basically tamagotchi or rpg characters that start as simple priests and unlock upgrades from there.

I know! It's just, to actually see art that plays it like they're pokevolutions is just ... wonderful

I dunno about you but it's surreal that fujos latched onto this movie of all things.

Really? I'd have been surprised if they didn't.
You need to be in more fujo spaces, this is such a fujo movie.
The charismatic boy cast, the better than average cinematography, the Gossip Girl vibe of the advertisement, the conceptually humorous concept of yaoi art for this fucking movie of all things -- it's like catnip

I am happy about it but I was very surprised about it, despite that I fully agree with >>3957910. Same with Orb, which is another church-centered story that is 90% talking.
The part that baffled me with both is that they're blew up in Asia. Like half of more of the Conclave fanart comes from Koreans. I know that there are many christians in South Korea but still.

Modern priest outfits are too boring for me. I am much more into the flashy medieval outfits they wore. They had really cool hats.

Dun trivia, the costume designer changed the color of the cardinals back to the deep darker red. Nowadays they're wearing a different, more glaring, hue. Personally not liking it, the old colors were better and apparently the designer thought the same.
Agree about modern outfits being too downtoned. Medieval chasubles and mitres were crazy. I also love the red papal hats and the capes. At least Tedesco wore his jacket like a cape.

It is not just Mitras, they had all kinds of cool hats, they dont wear anymore for whatever reason.

I heard the movie was banned in China. That would make it even more successful, respectively. Most studios are banking on China money these days.

I think it's about humility. Modern clergies probably try to appear closer to the people to distance themselves from the negatively perceived church of the middle ages and early modern age. I wouldn't wonder if it started with the second Vatican council. Tedesco would disagree.
Recently visited an Italian cathedral museum again which displayed a lot these attires. Some of the mitres, tiaras and capes were so overloaded with gemstones that they seemed too heavy to wear.

I especially miss the galeros and the cappellos, albeit you still casually see the latter in Italy sometimes. I think Benedict XVI even wore a red one once. When my mother was young and still living there almost every priest was wearing these.

Do turtles symbolize something specific or are they just supposed to be weird pets to show that the old pope had some weird quirks?

It's a western novel originally, unabridged audiobook is about 9hrs. The current fandom is based around the movie adaptation which should be out on disc now.

Yeah I bought the movie on youtube because I assumed I would like it so I wanted to support it but hate cinemas (and have no disc players anymore).
Should be piratable everywhere.

The VN is a sequel from fans for fans. So you shouldn't read it before the main story anyway.

There is even a cardinal participating who Francesco sought to exclude from the upcoming conclave.
And the Filipino cardinal Tagle from Manila is 67, just like the book version of Benitez (67 years old and from Manila).
We have our real life versions of Tremblay and Benitez. Kind of. And it's obvious that the dead pope of the story is basically Franscesco. Also nice coincidence to release the movie near the end of the last year, just shortly before the pope's health issues.

It's funny to see that the fans coming up with alternative twitter tags now considering that everybody will search for #conclave soon (and probably witness all the old man yaoi).

From the novel:
>The lock slid back and the door half opened. 'Your Eminence?' BenΓtez was clutching his unbuttoned cassock together at his throat. His thin brown feet were bare. The room behind him was in darkness. 'I'm sorry to interrupt you while you're dressing. May I have a word?'

I wonder if the guy knew what he was doing. If I didn't know better I would have sworn that the story was written by a woman for multiple reasons but it's not.
