Issue is that there is very limited ammount of historical information. Which limits what you can do with the story, unless you go into alt history territory. But Matsui wants to strictly stay historical. However, at the same time he is very clearly struggling with where to take the story. Like cracks already showed in the first timeskip. But Akkie did carry that arc. But in this second timeskip all the issues are fully exposed and Matsui rushing to the finish line is not helping.

I've liked the recent chapters more than the Akiie parts. I think he struggled in the middle because of having to restructure things to not get axed. He mentioned getting baited by /his/fags who he thought based on feedback would support the manga but then didn't show up. He admitted to having to cut at least one planned arc because of it.
I do think the way he likes to write his characters clashes with needing to follow a pre-existing history with people dying constantly and some characters being basically off limits for crazy/weird stuff (Go-Daigo mostly). But I doubt that will be an issue in the future since I don't see him ever doing a historical manga again. Although I do hope whatever he does next allows his characters to be as /fa/ as the elusive warriors. Tokiyuki's outfit in particular is a lot cuter than a school uniform.

The problem with /his/fags has nothing to do with the specific period or how faithful to history you are. They're just a fundamentally fickle, and consequently useless, audience. Most "history fans" are actually just celebrity worshipers who have chosen to obsess over dead people. And even when it's not people, it's certain institutions or technologies that they autistically obsess over. And they're just as crazy as the kpop and idol audiences. Any deviation from their ideal is seen as a betrayal and a justification to rescind their support.
I'm a bit of a /his/fag myself. I used to lament about this or that period being overlooked. But nigewaka has been enlightening. I now fully understand why so few people are willing to pander to us. And I no longer think that anyone should. People should just save themselves the headache and do fantasy instead.

I have similarly read plenty of althist fanfics on alternatehistory.com. Story of Tokiyuki is just lending itself to an althistory. Because there are many different directions you can take it in. You can make him popular leader as the civil war gets worse, you can lean more into the supporting the imperial line, you can have him captured and adopted by Takauji (my favourite) and more. It is all more interesting than what Matusi have been doing for last two arcs.

Most normies get their history knowledge from fiction, and bad historical representation in popular fiction, whether realistic or fantasy, translates to bad understandings of the past.
So many historical movies like Gladiator have made people think that ancient peoples used flaming arrows and catapults for regular warfare instead of for highly particular siege campaigns, which is not just wrong, but ridiculous, and more problematically, Game of Thrones and the Witcher for example tend to show medievalesque elites using religion as cynical propaganda for the masses, which is a reflection of the secular Western societies which created them, when the historical record indicates that that couldn't be further from the case with real old timey folk, and if you want proof, look at many of the elites of a lot of modern Islamic societies.
You may not want all historical media to function as educational media, but in effect, it always does, and most people will rarely if ever be able to tell when fantasy is not based on reality

Except he has. It's had its ups and downs like all works. But even at its lowest points nigewaka has still been a good manga. And at its highs it's great. And the most recent arcs have been good ones.
The idea that it totally went to shit is the cope position. It's the exact purityfagging I was talking about where the instant it deviated from the "correct" interpretation at all, the "history fans" declared it irredeemable garbage and have been pissing and shitting themselves over it ever since regardless of the actual quality of the manga.
Also, I strongly disagree with the idea that going althis would have made for a better story. Tokiyuki being a literal who that was crushed beneath the feet of a great man of history has been integral to the story, its themes, and the character writing. And Matsui has even managed to leverage it to build suspense around how it will end.
The only downsides to it being a relatively faithful historical story are very specific Matsui writing quirks. He tends to do smaller character arcs that build depth through volume and interconnectivity with one another. So everyone dropping dead constantly hampers that process. And having certain characters that are effectively off limits from writing as particularly flawed would be a big limitation on anyone, but especially on Matsui. If there weren't such a taboo around shitting on the imperial family, I'm sure Go-Daigo would have been an Asano-like antagonist. But even with those issues, he's still done a good job by leaning harder on characters that do work with his writing style like Sadamune and Uncle Yasuie.
I don't think it will end up being as good as AssClass overall. But that was always going to be a high bar to try and clear.

Characters and their interactions have gotten more stereotypical compared to the first arc, and they lack soul and fun of it. The first arc of hiding and marching on Kamakura was the best and showed that Matsui had most of the planning for it. Unlike everything afterwards.

He was a perfect candidate for a super fucked up Matsui villain that is later partially redeemed just like Asano. But portraying an emperor like that would be a big no no. Takauji would still be the main villain, of course.
