Family Force V Book 1 Storytime
>Fighting alien kaiju with your family on a Friday night is a totally normal part of being a teenager... right? Well, it is for Maise, who, despite her protests, continues the family legacy of keeping the world safe, all while trying to get good grades, impress her crush, and balance extracurriculars. But growing up in this family means Maise must live up to the expectations of those she’s destined to protect while not losing herself in the process.

>MATT BRALY (Disney’s Amphibia) and AINSWORTH LIN team up for the YA graphic novel of the year full of action and charm in FAMILY FORCE V!

Maybe it's just the limitations of American publishing but even stuff aimed at literal elementary schoolers in Japan has more depth than this. Hell, Hunger Games came out more than a decade ago and was allowed to handle the death and politics without the kiddie gloves.

Tbf I'm pretty sure some japanese media aimed at elementary schoolers tend to be wayyy more violent than their counterparts in America. I recall official Demon Slayer-themed educational materials being a thing despite the anime featuring lots of blood and violence (I believe Mugen Train was a hard R in the U.S. while it was considered a family film in Japan).

This is another bizarre thing. It's apparently literally a crime to investigate these Clans' civilian identity, but they're very casual about how they're going to make that a center piece of a planned series of news articles.
There's also the odd contrast between the activity having become mundane and the ongoing effort to keep it completely out of sight of civilians.

Story-wise? Completely generic. Tokusatsu "inspired" in the same way every female weeb tries to do a magical girl "inspired" series at some point in their career. Lots of plot holes that are waved away with "don't think about it too hard" like the vicious monster not killing Daichi when it had the chance and Citialli's mom banking her career on a story that's literally illegal to publish instead of doing some gossip rag on the new Trooper. Pacing is also way too fast and none of the characters, even the MC, have a compelling arc. If there are any preteen graphic novel fans, they probably won't see any of the issues with the generic premise and speedrun handling of tragedy. Good luck if the kid has read at least one manga in their life, though.
Art-wise? Competent. The artist must read manga though because a bunch of the panel and page layouts look like they'd read better if mirrored. A lot of comic artists who read lots of manga have this problem with page composition. The colors look a bit airbrushed and webtoon-y. The only noteworthy page is the double spread in the beginning where you can tell the artist had way more tike to draw that for promotional purposes. Action is unreadable at times and badly paced.
Overall? If I were giving this a review on goodreads, a 3/5 since I acknowledge that I'm older than the target demo. If I were rating on my own enjoyment and judgement of the writing and art quality, I'd give it a 2.5/5. If it had actual qualities that an adult could appreciate like a culture clash between Daichi being straight up Japanese vs. Japanese-American (and not him being a generic American stereotype of an overachiever with an ego) or the mom struggling to show patience towards her daughter whose irresponsibility ultimately led to the death of her husband, then maybe it could've been a 4/5.

The dad got attacked by a new type of alien. That really wasn't an issue that could've been solved by her simply being around from the start, so I think that the author did not fuck up that particular bit.

Eh, the mom was shown to be short-tempered in the beginning and was the easiest vehicle to show the weight of the dad's death. The fact that the AI in the tube and the mom's brother were the ones to reassure Maise that it wasn't her fault feels strange more than anything. It makes since for Maise to blame herself since that's what many teens would do in that situation, but not giving any depth to the mom's handling of it (she was dragged into this, loved her husband dearly, then was made the new leader for a bit) was a big missed opportunity ot give the story greater depth. For how much the story is about family, no one has an actual character arc besides Maise and Daichi.

Capeshit doesn't have to be Disney-fied stakes with rapid-fire pacing. I can't even compare this to manga because there are plenty of example of stories that can hook a reader within the 60-page first chapter and still have good pacing, stakes, and character dynamics for the rest of the first book. It's like you have to grade on a curve for American graphic novels.

People don't want just the reviews of the author's peers because that says literally nothing about the quality of the story. Why the fuck with Dana Terrace or the Bones guy submit anything but praise towards a contemporary who they want to succeed? Better than expected and its almost entirely because killing off THAT character early on shifts the dynamic tremendously. Brings more emotional gutpunch to everything that happens in the story. The cousin doesn't feel that necessary and they could have handled him way better, but I guess in the next book he'll get a better treatment.
This feels like Ultraman Rising, which is a good movie, but still very much westerners trying to do tokusatsu meets Pixar. Which I know is the only way to get any toku inspired story out there in the U.S, so I get it. It works here and in UR, but it also makes it lack that crazy spice found in toku movies and shows. But as a whole, its good. The only glaring flaw I find is the mother taking his kids to battle and possibly DIE, but I guess that applies to every hero story with children being superheroes. There is no actual excuse as to why parents would let their children fight criminals and risk their lives before they even graduate, you just gotta ignore that part.

It's by the numbers, and while that might have worked for people unfamiliar with how by the numbers sentai generally is, but it's also very generic in every other way too, which is pretty disappointing
But it is the pilot, so if they're doing it just to establish how sentai generally works only to kick it out from under readers later, and considering the obvious twist of the aliens and original family doing all this for immoral purposes, I have a good feeling that's how it'll go down, but I won't hold my breath for them to take it in an actually interesting direction since deconstruction/reconstruction has its own host of cliches to deal with and this feels like they're going for a very specific teenager/Disney type market that won't care for that shit
At least the girls are cute, though is it GIF or JIF?

>What did you think of it?
It's a henshin hero inspired series with no actual ideas for the genre. Every bit of potential for powers, tech and monsters was made as generic and shallow as possible to prioritize melodrama. They didn't even bother to use a motif that allowed heroes to have their own twist.

The action "tries" but is still amateurish in its clusmy disjointed attempts at being dynamic. Enemies will just stand there huddled together doing nothing while the heroes pull off a move that makes zero sense.

The story makes less sense than the preview established. At first it seemed like it was exclusively family that were recruited to be troopers which would explain why someone would be irresponsible enough to use actual small children in combat. But there are other branches with full grown adults available. Which makes the whole plot feel stupid.

All in all its a C- toku story

Side rant... Every lame poser western take on Tokusatsu heroes has them fight kaiju, but actual series like Super sentai and Kamen rider fight KAIJIN. They fight intelligent humanoids that can challenge them as warriors and often have their own arcs

B-, I didn't hate it, but I have my qualms which I will now list.
>Secret Identity
The Moon Troopers having a secret identity makes so little sense. They aren't fighting criminals, they aren't throwing anybody in prison who would then break out. They're fighting Kaiju that they just fucking murder and that's it. There's no retribution from the (seemingly mindless) monsters coming, you're literally backed by the government (who already know your identity), why aren't you public with it? Only way I can see them taking it is "Moon Computer said so to isolate them from their peers for the experiment." but that's just writing the story for him.
>Plan to Uncover Secret Identities
Like the anon above me said, it would be quite literally illegal to publish their identities. If we're going with them being government-protected, then at best you're looking at dumping it anonymously online. Through a publication? Egged on by her editor? What the FUCK are you on about, that place gets shutdown in an hour from the scandal.
>Last Fight
I didn't hate Maise taking control for her plan, but Daichi should've 100% been controlling the big mech. From both a standpoint of them coming to understand each other (and share that responsibility) and the standpoint of he's the only one who's probably seen the fucking thing even fused since Maise already fucked it up once. He should've been in control and calling the shots with some nicer tone or something. That was a missed character moment in my mind.

But otherwise, yeah, it was serviceable. The civvie friends get way too much of a backseat outside of mystery meat crush who has the B plot but that's on them shoving as much into the book as they could, so I get it. Thanks for the storytime, OP and good on Matt for making something OK.

Seems retarded to try to bank on it getting her money and saving her career when journalists normally put the money and career to the side to do that kind of "illegal" reporting. Those journalists are putting their careers on the line to cover a forbidden topic for the sake of journalistic integrity, which is basically the opposite of what Citialli's mom is doing. She's being presented as someone desperate for a big story that will sell in order to KEEP her career. It's shown that the Troopers are on good terms with like everyone so revealing their identities would not only be not allowed but would also only bring harm to the Troopers unlike the uncovering of a corrupt truth like your Cold War example.

Pacing is the biggest issue besides the boring characters. Way too fast, especially at the end where the friend discovers her identity, she goes "don't tell anyone", and the story quickly goes into maximum overdrive to wrap everything up. Tragedy and drama is all about how it's executed. People can yap all they want about how there were actual stakes because the dad died and how it's supposed to be sad because there are close up panels of the characters' stressed faces and them crying, but if the execution's shit the feelings won't land.

In a time where Pen Ward and Alex Hirsch each struggle to get a new show to last more than one season, or where JG Quintel gets his second show mistreated and ultimately finds himself having to dig up his first series from 10+ years ago, I admire how proactive Braly's been just these last couple of years. As Amphibia was wrapping, he already made the jump to developing an original movie AND an original graphic novel series. It's very cool to see him experiment in so many different formats and being rewarded for it.

So while Rebecca Sugar stays begging for another SU revival, I hope Braly puts Amphibia to rest after Strange Voyage. I'd rather see some new concepts from people who worked on an older beloved series than a forced attempt at keeping said beloved series adding more and more story forever. No. We do NOT need to revisit the Calamity Trio and introduce some new way Anne can physically reunite with the Plantars. Grow up and let it REST.

True, I do love how she's developed as a musician and is making studio albums. Rebecca Sugar always felt like the most Artsy animation showrunner out there, one who truly never lost her love for the beauty of creation even after getting disillusioned by company politics, studio censorship, and executive interference.

Still, as far as her non-musical writing goes, I'd rather see something NEW from her as opposed to MORE STEVEN UNIVERSE, AGAIN. I respect Sugar's wishes if she really does have ideas for that franchise, but I personally feel no desire to learn of the Diamonds' origins or whatever. The flood of Gumball, Regular Show, and PnF revival announcements is definitely bringing out some of my more anti-IP feelings lately, but I will always champion original ideas before resorting to digging something up that had a nice, lengthy run or a concrete ending. I hate that the Book of Bill website from last year is now making it more likely that Hirsch really may cave one day and go through with an animated Gravity Falls revival, even if just for a one-off special.

He will always be an one-hit-wonder at this point.
There's been theories that Rebecca might do some indie stuff.. but I don't know. I hope SU stays dead too.

At least, I'm glad that Dana and Matt (kinda) are making new ideas.
Just hope that Matt stops with Amphibia after Strange Voyage. For TOH, I would love an art book... since the crew art of the show is amazing... but that's it.

Honestly it could end up being good since they sort of balance out each other's flaws. Sugar's art sense (especially her colors) will make up for Braly's mediocre technical skills in art while Braly is usually stronger than Sugar at the small character to character moments that feel "real". Unfortunately this recent graphic novel makes me doubt Braly's actual strength as a writer (is he only good when it's a comittee/other writers behind the scenes are heavily editing his ideas?) but that's where Sugar can come in since she can be another person at the meeting table.
