My personal headcanon for the neighbor/friend scenario is that Gwen's biological grandfather was a plumber and Max's old partner who died fighting some alien glip glops or whatever and promised to look after his family when he died.

Glad they didn't push em say what you will about Ben's love life but Gwen and Kevin has way more interesting potential to write about then a generic romance Ben and Gwen would have had.
