At least Freefall took some effort to explain how their robots work (ignore the quirky main character full robot, he can stay up for days because he's a dingus) and how the mad scientist who developed them did in fact try to replicate human brain logic and not terribly concerned by little issues such as developing human-like sense of self - which corporate solved by just putting a directive ordering them to scrap themselves before that happens.
Stage 1 capitalism happens (bourgeois realizes the workforce are also potential customers and robots are able to buy themselves out of scrap value), and the only thing preventing this going down the usual route is Sam Starfall being there.
