Marica, that is the most similar word in spanish for faggot (also maricon is common), at least in "neutral spanish" that the latin dubs use, as example in argentina we have puto that one can argue is worse that marica.

Also ladybugs are call mariquitas in spanish.

Every country has some equivalent or version to call homosexual people, for example in some Mayan dialects Caxchle means shit eating scarab and is used as a slur for homosexuals

Latinoamerican cultures are a beautiful thing, I still can't help but giggle at the adventures of ladybug in Spanish.

From 2010/11 to 2014 the mexican dub studio Sensasiones Sonicas was run by a family of producers called Urbans, they were infamous for ruining literally every project they decided to touch, and by touch I mean participating in said dubs without having any talent to the point of displacing other va to have their place/characters.
Adventure Time, Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated, Ben 10 Omniverse were mostly ruined by them, Regular Show and Gumball partially.

The Pink Panther Aardvark cartoons are way funnier in German because they made one major change: they made the aardvark a female and the female comedian who voices her rewrote the dialogue. They still kept her as Elise for the 2011 show too.

> Why? They just are!
Well, I don't know about Spanish, but in Russian gender of a word can be easily derived from the way it sounds, basically. Words that end on a consonant are considered to be firm, therefore they are male. Words that end on a vowel sound soft, therefore they are female. There's also the neutral gender for the words that end on a few "neutral sounding" vowels. It's easy.
I'm sure Spanish must also make at least some sense.

I don't think it's identity nonsense.
In Italy, gays are just kinda there, too. Some are cool. Some are assholes. They're no different than any other group of people and I think it's because we never really excluded them from society. I would guess the same happened in the places between Tacolandia and Chimichurriterra.
But Anglos? They did. They excluded homos from everything. So without external influence or pressure to be part of society, the ones in Anglo countries turned into what they are.

Yes. It surprises "Italian" Americans that we're generally pretty chill with the homos. Some areas, like Naples, even have millennia-old traditions of acceptance of it. Look up what femminielli are. My grandma had one as a housekeeper because they, according to her, "have the body and strength of a man but the finickiness of a girl." They're growing more rare these days and despite the general acceptance, the word can still be used derisively but they're just people like anyone else.

Lobezno at least refers to a wolf.

Here in mexico we had or 'Guepardo' (a cheetah), or 'Aguja Dinamica' (Dynamic Needle, a name that sounds just like a megaman weapon).

As a mexican, i can agree with the spaniards at least on Wolverine's name. What we had was stupid.

Americans were perceived as fellow proletarians that are oppressed and brainwashed by evil capitalists. So not everything made by them was evil by default.

The USSR imported neutral Hollywood movies and also stuff like Wall Street with Charlie Sheen, the latter as a cautionary demonstration of the rampant corruption and capitalism in the USA.

The Fairly OddParents in Brazilian Portuguese. I don't understand any Portuguese but it still is quite more entertaining for the single fact of what they did to Cosmo.

His VA in that dub, one of the most prolific dinners in that country's voiceover industry, essentially threw out his English vocal characterization and ad libbed the whole performance, sounding far more like a normal man by default compared to what he sounded like in English (well after the OYC shorts and very start of the OG series) but then spicing it up with a large array of unique voices and impressions.

>>148949225
Funnily enough, with communism and Dallas, Dallas was a small factor to overthrowing communism in Romania. Communist Romania, the most repressive of the Eastern Bloc, aired it as its own western import in expectation that the Romanians would be disgusted by the excesses of capitalism. Instead, a lot of those watching wanted to be rich like the cast of Dallas.

For all its faults the Adventure Time dub did the right thing by letting Jake, Finn and Ice King VAs act as mexicans, this added jokes and charisma that they didn't have in the OG dub which is the reason why the show became so popular and why so many latinos care about all three, if anything the problem is that CN forced them to remove it later, by then it was too little too late to pretend to follow the OG dub and this effectively killed the charisma of all characters, doesn't help that this was done around atrocious episodes such as Brezzy in Season 6 which effectively killed the popularity of the show had originally as a wacky comedy.

The official translation for Final Fantasy VII is infamously bad, but every Final Fantasy since VIII had a good Spanish translation. Many PS1 and PS2 players grew up with those translations. It was the right place and time to play JRPG's during in our formative years and in our dialect. I especially hold the translation for VIII and IX with great nostalgia. I am salty we didn't get FFT in Spanish, only FFTA1-2 did. Was the War of the Lions PSP version in Spanish? I am not sure.

as a neutral third party that doesn't speak a lick of spanish.
petalo is shit because it sounds masculine. should have picked the feminine name of a flower
bubbles is a direct translation, but it sounds kinda bad because the R and J make it sound rough. Agua would have fit better, kept the water theme and sounds more like a name.
cactus is thematically appropriate (green and spiky) but it sounds ridiculous.
granted, Buttercup canon's reason for her name is because "it also starts with B"

it also loses the B alliteration

i would have suggested

It's a regional language in Sardegna just as French is regional in Val d'Aosta and Piemonte, Slovenian is regional in Friuli (as is German) and Greek is regional in Puglia.
>How well could you understand and read Romanian?
Can read it just fine, can understand it if spoken slowly by an educated person but most Italians wouldn't necessarily be able to do either because Romanian has a lot of non-Latin influence. About a third of Romanian vocabulary is non-Latin. I can only understand it because I dated a Romanian for a while.

This scene is amazing to me just because of the fact an official Spongebob dub would imply he swears up a huge storm out of frustration. Good stuff. And Shin-Chan's Dutch dub is also legendary here though I guess that's more /a/.

I would argue that "marica"/"maricón" is closer in meaning to "sissy", "pansy", "fairy", or even "queer". Harshness-wise, "puto" would be the best Spanish equivalent for "faggot".

>For example in some Mayan dialects Caxchle means shit eating scarab and is used as a slur for homosexuals

I hadn't heard of that one before. I'm aware of the word "mayate", of Nahua origin, with the exact same meaning, i. e., "dung beetle". In Mexico, the term is mostly used to refer to tops, particularly those on the down-low.

Faggot and Marica are often used to describe a drama queen or someone that make everything about themselves even without the homosexual connotation.

As for Mayan insults, there are a lot of dialects that originate from the native tongues, it's an interesting thought that a lot of regional insults have their roots in them.

>I get that, but what specifically aboutbthe two langauges are the poking fun at?
European Spanish dubbers, for some reason, do some of the most bizzare (in the most anglo sense of that word) translations choices, not only in animation but for dubbing tv and movies in general, for example; The Dark Side of The Force in Star Wars is "El Reverso Tenebroso de la Fuerza" in Spain while in Latin America is "El Lado Oscuro de la Fuerza" the Euro-Spanish one would translate back to English as "The Grim Reverse of The Force" another one is that in Dragon Ball they didn't use terms like "Super Saiyan" until like Dragon Ball GT when Super Saiyan 4 happened. before that they were calling them "Super Guerrero del Espacio" (Super Warrior from Space) and for Super Saiyan 2 it was something like "Hyper Guerrero del Espacio" (Hyper Warrior from Space) they in general do those very werid localizations to the point there are Spaniards that prefer to consume their content in Latin American Spanish because we really just do better translations.

Funny you posted him now. The same actor who potrayed Don Ramon's cousin in El Chavo del Ocho (German Robles) voiced Ego, Davy Jones among others in latin.

That's something that bothers me of our dubs, there are a lot of "translated names"
Fred Flintstone (Pedro Picapiedra), Barney Rubble (Pablo Mármol), George Jetson (Súper Sónico), Jane Jetson (Ultra Sónico), Elroy Jetson (Cometín Sónico), Judy Jetson (Lucero Sónico), Rosie (Robotina).
Gomez Addams (Homero Addams), Pugsley (Pericles), Wednesday (Merlina), Fester (Lucas), Lurch (Largo).
Captain Hero (Capitanazo), Foxxy Love (Morocha Amorocha), Xandir P. Wifflebottom (Xander P. Lindasnalgas), Wooldoor Sockbat (Mueble O'Algo), Toot Braunstein (Lulú D'Cartón), Spanky Ham (Puerquísimo Chancho) but I must admit Octopussoir (Pulpanocha) was so badass.
Homer Simpson (Homero Simpson), Barney gumble (Barney Gómez) Nelson Muntz (Nelson Rufino), Itchy & Scratchy (Tomy & Daly because can't be more obvious a parody of Tom & Jerry), Super Nintendo Chalmers (Inspector Archundia), Major Joe quimby (Alcalde Diamante), Miss Hoover (Maestra Stricter), Reverend Lovejoy (Reverendo Alegría), Helen Lovejoy (Helena Alegría), Chief Wiggum (Jefe Gorgory), Ralph Wiggum (Rafa Gorgory) and so on...

Those were mostly due to the Spaniards having to rely on both badly translated scripts from Toei Japan and the French/German scripts and masters later on.

Spanish being a latin language has always been extremely poor in terms of short, blunt, gutural vocabulary and expression, germanic languages can often just borrow words and have the meaning carry over just from the sound alone. Superhero names are mean to be striking, evocative and carry a degree of musicality to them, which is why i think ultimately it is a mistake to translate a lot of these in the first place, the important part of verbal expression is lost while the literal or implied meaning, which is ultimately superfluous, barely passes on. It is much, much easier to introduce the word 'HULK' into Spanish than to make an equivalent. 'HULK' sounds strong. 'HULK' explains itself.

No to mention you either risk creating a gender pronoun confusion or a singular to plural issue.

"Crack" being used for "pro" or someone really good at something is usually slang. It would be like saying being a "wiz" at something in English.
