The comic crowd already knew about anime/manga. It’s not like it was entirely unheard of in America, thanks to localizations of Gachaman and GoLion, and of course Astro Boy and Gigantor decades before that.
Early Anime/manga imports crossed over with the comic shop crowd.
I’m gonna guess you were like 10 in 2000 , or around that, and your perception of reality is shaped around that. Toonami /Pokemon made it mainstream for kids, but it wasn’t unheard of in the already niche comic scene.
