Why did cartoons start to like cheap, flat and ugly by the end of the decade and 2000s period? A show like Fairly Oddparents looked terrible for 2001 standards

Money. They used to spend a lot of money making animated cartoons in the 90s. Then foreign kids properties like Power Rangers and Pokemon came in and ate everybody's lunch. So American companies stopped trying.

In 1993, they came out with 2 Stupid Dogs. Pretty fantastic show, but it also shifted the art style in the industry quite a bit, because it defined what all of Cartoon Network later would become. I guess the conspiracy is that Cartoon Network kept picking these flat shows because it was cheaper to make, or something. It sounds plausible.

Transition from networks to cable.

Networks had extremely limited timeslots for shows so there was fucking insane competition for airtime. While at the same time had way higher budgets for individual shows.

Cable had time to fill and barely any money to put to a budget. So they ended up making loads of significantly cheaper crap.

By 1996 the FCC started making more and more strict rules for children's content making networks less and less viable. while at the same time cable channels were shopping around for increased content with things like the What a Cartoon show and Oh Yeah Cartoons giving pilots to loads of up and comers. Cable started taking over as the leaders of children's content slowly for the rest of the decade.

It wasn't just them, Nickelodeon was also doing a lot with their Nicktoons also having pathetically tiny budgets but they made a lot of money and gained popularity despite it. Either way the CN cost saving antics had a lot of repercussions over the years.

Their initial series brought back the old Hanna Barbera methodology of cutting all costs on movement and design, but making it up with lots of personality and characterization. Dexter's Laboratory, Johnny Bravo, and Powerpuff Girls doing incredibly well was noticed by other studios who saw that a much cheaper show can still do well. Disney did the same thing when they started making original animated content for the Disney Channel in the late 90s and early 00s. none of those shows ever approached the budgets given to their network stuff a decade earlier.

Adventure Time outperforming Korra is what taught the entire animation industry that 11 minute segments made on almost no budget at all sells amazingly. And everyone else in the 2010s kept that up.

The reason why Total Drama’s artstyle sucks is because it’s stiff as shit. Motion tweening isn’t a bad thing, it can be expressive, like there are tons of flash-animated thickline shows that manage to capture the appeal that traditional ones like Dexter’s Lab and Powerpuff Girls had, with posing and expressive animation and all that, but Total Drama lacks that kind of stuff, it’s why autistic fan animations and fetish art capture the style of the show so perfectly, cause the shows style sucks.

Look we just gotta appreciate modern SB for what it is, it’s a well-animated, wacky, expressive, cartoonist-driven show in an era where all shows are either bean mouth garbage or pale imitations of anime. A cartoonist-driven show like modern SB is something we desperately need. The show actually looks fun to work on, can’t say the same about StuGo, Hailey’s On It, or all those shitty Family Guy/Rick & Morty clones.

I love The Patrick Star show too, it’s far more experimental artistically and is kinda rebellious too, as it had jokes making fun of stuff like bean mouth and cartoon reviewers.

Like yes, SpongeBob does feel like a completely different show now, but it’s better to see a long-running show try something new rather than stay the same, cause the alternative for SB is rather than having expressive animation we could’ve had 100+ more seasons of season 6-9 tier garbage.
