I think part of what really gets me about this is that it's one of those "perfect gotchas" that people SEVERELY self-inserting do. Like they have all these immediate perfect vocabulary choices in a long-winded takedown of someone and it doesn't read realistically at all. Like seriously, "utilitarian functions of the female body that you find so incredibly repulsive"? Christ, how do people read stuff written like this? Even down to the "NEWSFLASH, MY FRIEND" crap. I really wish I knew what word to describe this style of writing beyond "pretentious" because it's a specific ilk of that.

I'll post a couple strips. It's an amusing comic like the sort of daily strip you'd get a chuckle out of now and then. It seems like it started as random shitposting that eventually developed into a shared universe. The author is also self-aware so the knee jerk reactions dismissing the comic are kind of funny. Though who knows how well this adaptation will keep to the spirit of the source material.

When women write fiction, it tends to skew more towards autobiographical (this happened to me, I feel like X or Y) versus how men write (I want this to happen and I want to do this). It's why a lot of books written by women are romance stories, stories about their childhood, or their current first world problems. But if women writers aren't reading enough quality books or have a genuine interest in improving their craft, you get stuff like recent Pixar movies where it becomes a long-winded therapy session and diary entry. And to make it worse, they don't even have interesting lives to speak of.

Does this page lead to anything where her friends cut her off or is it just a one-and-done strip? It seems bizarre that she can just have an out of nowhere violent outburst at a random nice person and it be treated as funny but also still be invited to hang out and people want to be around her. Half the strips I've seen where she's talking to people (including her lesbian crush) she's just being an asshole with no upside. I don't understand why any of the other characters would want to be around her (aside from self-inserting reasons for the creator.)
Anonymous No.148978555 [Report] >>148978583 >>148978623

Everyone in the comic is just as mental as the creator so the characters don't give a fuck. There's a girl that throws pig blood on all the male students as a feminist statement and goes to the principal drenched in it and emotionless, and the joke like all of those types of strips is just that the characters downplay it right at the end (the prinicipal was only mad that she also used glitter on the janitor and now the janitor will never shut up about it) and that what she did seemed "a bit 70's." Aside from more esoteric artsy "2deep4u" moments it's shit like that constantly, other characters like her crush constantly talk and act like this, it's not just Marsha.

Just because it mixes in generalized millenial humor (and female humor at that) doesn't mean it's not overbearingly feminist. Honestly she should've just gotten this made as a show with other AT alumni and no one would've batted an eye since this is what you'd expect from AT crew, but JG had a chance encounter with her and made it his mission to help her out. Though it's telling that she's an asian self-proclaimed feminist in California who'd speak out about sexualization of women in media and other very important matters, and through 2015 onwards when it was the most ripe time for people like her to have a career boost, no one else wanted to make her work a show. Almost like people knew it wouldn't be good for one.

Yeah, but if he didn't get to meet her she wouldn't have been able to tell him that and the interaction wouldn't have been sticking around in his mind. It's obvious he does like it, but it'd have been more likely that the first thing on his mind after getting a development deal wouldn't have been jumping back to this old comic. Most industry women and prominent female Internet artists are too busy drawing yaoi and anime girl pinups to care about such boring artsy slop. Plus it's about some insufferable high school girls, most adults and younger kids will probably find their issues boring. I'd easily be able to ignore it like the rest of cartoons the past 10 years (2015 was already 10 years ago ffs) if JG didn't have his name on it. The feminist creator actively spits on bro culture and dude behavior like Regular Show for being sexist and demeaning and devotes multiple strips to the girls berating and complaining about dudes being dudes, so this is just depressing. I don't know why everything has to be like this now, even the fun chill guy who made RS falls in love with shit like this and propels it further into the industry. I get the vague overlap in humor and weird slice of life fits his niche but the rest is an active insult through millenial humor feminist ramblings.

Seeing how much JG changed since around the end of Regular Show just makes me feel miserable worrying about what the fuck will happen to its revival. At least Close Enough was its own thing so when they did a whole episode about feminism and overthrowing the patriarchy where women scrub floors and can't vote it was with characters and writing already introduced like that, Emily talks about being a feminist around episode 1 so what difference does it even make.

Why is the creator trusting JG to do it if she thought Regular Show was sexist and demeaning? That makes no sense.
Anonymous No.148988448 [Report]
>>148988337
Because he liked her series and there's still overlap in style like I said. She also could've said it passively considering it took 7 years for it to come to fruition and she clearly wasn't chasing it to get made. A creator said he loved her work and she said "I can't make this a show but since you're a successful guy you probably could."

And I doubt she'll just not have creative involvement and it's entirely in his hands. Especially since he held onto her words for over half a decade. He'll probably want to stick to her vision and what she requests as much as possible. In terms of her actually agreeing when he actually got the deal, it's not like Close Enough didn't exist already. The Men Rock episode is extremely similar to how many feminist strips in this comic are, she probably felt he'd nail her humorous "twists" on feminism considering an entire episode was devoted to the girls being "ironic" about men and men not getting it, leading to an extreme scenario where men have dicks on flags while the poor women weep. Seems perfectly in line with shit like the pig blood strip.
Anonymous No.148988543 [Report] >>148988684
>>148971137 (OP)
I wonder if this is going to be segmented skits (which is rare for a show to do, forgoing a conventional structure) or full stories incorporating various strips here and there sprinkled through the main focus of the episode. I don't think I could handle an 11 minute, or god forbid 22 minute storyline about these characters being unbridled cunts and it not just being a one and done gag. Like when Family Guy has a shitty gag that doesn't land, where Peter murders children or shoots up a school, it's not the whole episode and hopefully a less than 3 minute joke.
Anonymous No.148988684 [Report]
>>148988543
Honestly it probably won't matter what the structure is, it's an important part of the characters' archetypes that they behave that way in any given circumstance, so they're just going to be like that regardless. You either have one full story where Marsha hates people and whines about men and deals with a thing, or 5 skits where she whines about 5 different circumstances. If it was a bunch of short scenes for 11 minutes like Azumanga Daioh most of the skits are still going to be consistent with their characterization. It just means if there's one character that's not so bad they might get a chance for a 3-4 minute moment as a palate cleanser.

You either like these characters or don't, people keep insisting JG will put his own spin on things but the characters just are what they are, he'd have to outright change the characters to make anything better and he's obviously not going to do that. People are desperately delusional if they think he's somehow going to fix whatever problems people have with it since that's in the DNA of the comic. I get having faith in JG but this is someone else's work he admires where everything was already pre-established by someone else he's making the show for.

tl;dr If you're a normal-brained person who thinks the comic is bad, the show is going to be the same just with possibly more depth to insist the characters are sympathetic, which the comic already tries. Quintel's name or not it's better to ignore the show and just wait to see what happens to RS, if it's shit just ignore it too. Thanks to a decade of bullshit, it's become very easy to just give up on something.

The comic definitely shits on guys for behaving like the characters in RS, but I wouldn't be surprised if she enjoys Mordecai's failed love arcs because the women bitch at him constantly. CJ turning into a storm and almost murderin Mordecai, Margaret, and her family seems to suit her sensibilities. Cap it off with a broken "this was my fault, woe is me for being a cunt" but only apologizing because this time she didn't have a decent excuse, and it suits these characters to a T.

Remember when Margaret was going to call the cops on Mordecai and assumed he stole a car from a crimelord when he just wanted to take her to the airport?

Jillian also probably loved Margaret being a massive slut in the early episodes, constantly having a new boyfriend and still pouting when they're jerks even though she dates obvious dickheads. "my new boyfriend" was literally a running gag to the point a deleted scene had Rigby call out how Mordecai was like 15th in line with Margaret which caused her shock. Too bad they never aired that.

Does the creator actually have mental problems? She writes about characters dealing with them in her other work and her way of writing feels like a giant red flag with constant, neverending bitching about gender norms and traditionalism, like having a fat girl put on an american flag bikini just to douse herself in garbage at a fourth of july fireworks show to make a statement. I'd rhetorically ask "who reads shit like this?" but someone's response would be "Quintel" and now I just made myself sad.

Remember that New Year's Kiss scene where the guys are gawking at women and talking about how hot they are so Mordecai goes over unsolicited and gets one's phone number, and the girl turns out to be an uncaring shithead Mordecai was lucky to dodge a bullet with? I can't imagine Jillian writing the story that way since she can't even handle high school boys calling classmates "hot" or "cute" and having a normal ass interest in the opposite sex.

The more I see of this shitty comic the longer the list grows of how bad it is.
>very long rant at a guy for finding periods gross which veers into praising the functions of the vagina being important and men should love it if they find women attractive, dont worry its funny because they shove tampons up his nose which means they're also immature?
>fat bitch mad that she has to put on deodorant and men should consider themselves lucky to smell her pheromones
>punching a normal nice girl for existing
>also ruining game night again and leaving because the guys were interested in a brothel which makes her mad, the guys even thinking maybe they were too hard on "her" for telling her to just have fun, while having your cake and eating it too by them not caring anyway later
>multiple strips of the girls mad about guys catcalling and talking about finding women attractive because it's pathetic
>other girl dousing male students with pigs blood to make a feminist statement, the principal is only mad because the janitor won't shut up
>ugh why are you wearing a dress? you're just giving men what they want!
I won't include the cat one because I don't even get what the point is. That to the anthropormophic cat it looks like the other one is just being coddled by a woman like he's smug?
Am I forgetting anything? It's most of what's been posted. I like how someone tried to defend this earlier (this or the other thread) because surely the period strip was an isolated joke. I don't know why people see stuff like this then pretend it's something else.

Her super power is that no matter how many functions she ruins, no matter how much she says that everything everyone does is wrong and she hates them, she can still make everyone invite her to all gatherings and still have them always worry about how she feels instead of ostracizing her for only ever causing problems, attacking people, and dragging every happy occassion down.

At least he had the brains to remember to make a show fun and the characters to be enjoyable, he just let his writers snowball the love triangle to hell and back and because one retard had to say "he a SIMPUH" in a video, and everyone lives off memes now, that's all anyone remembers. People shit on Mordecai but he still has various episodes where it's fun to watch him and Rigby fuck around, be pals, chill, etc. He does have redeeming qualities and he does actually try and care about others, all while it's still obvious he's still kind of a shitty slacker and Rigby was too until Eileen "fixed" him. Marsha has absolutely no redeeming qualities and the creator seems adverse to the thought of her even having a soul because the world should deal with her instead.

I thought pic related was a fantasy sequence but no, everyone in the school fucking worships her for... not going to prom? Only her stupid catgirl crush gets upset and that's because she wanted them both to have fun together after Marsha ruined her hype for prom. She says they have to be the ones to make it fun, and was sad her awesome, amazing best friend wouldn't be there, not because she recognizes Marsha is cancer. This shit is unreal.

Even Rowley knew when to cut Greg Heffley out of his life for only ever dragging people down, and that was a satisfying and engaging story despite the status quo (though Greg does eventually become tame since the franchise needed 20 books, bad shit just happens around him now not because of him.)

It's weird how everyone is glazing this fat bitch. She doesn't even seem to be the creator's self-insert. Jillian Tamaki (the creator) looks much more like the cute catgirl. Her cousin, Mariko Tamaki, on the other hand.... It's the same cunt who made that one comic about daughter of Starfire with the fat self-insert blob. She also made some other comics with her cousin. It's weird though, because the bulldyke has a crush on the catgirl. Sweet home Alabama..??

I think it's just the kind of character she resonates with. I was also thinking about how they don't look perfectly alike but if no one was going to mention that I didn't feel like wasting energy on figuring out how to explain what it seems like to me. But she probably uses the design to sort of lift off from how she feels about herself and the world. Like she makes the character sort of ugly and unconventionally attractive so she can vent about "beautiful people" and shit. It's sort of like how a lot of people draw their avatars as deformed wackly gremlins just not that extreme? More about being parasocial and how much feminism mindsets about gender norms and expectations and society in general has shaped her life, which she's talked about herself. It's still pretty obvious she's self-inserting through the writing of the character, I think the look might just be how she feels she is or something. It's very common among creators to sort of uglify themselves intentionally. Either for a joke or insight to their mentalities.

Also I didn't know she was related to the daughter of starfire creator, fuck.

Mariko and Jillian are like perfect lookalikes of bitchy bowlcut and catgirl, and are probably close given the numerous collabs. So maybe Jillian is projecting some of her more negative traits or whatever onto the bowlcut bitch and she has multiple self-inserts, but the inspiration seems obvious.
Anonymous No.148990939 [Report]

Seeing her in that picture and the wikipedia one, I can honestly sort of see why Jillian would deteriorate her personal character into looking like Marsha, especially given the art style. But yeah it's also certain she's self-inserting into multiple characters. I mean it's natural to write yourself into multiple characters in your own story. It's just in this case, they're pretty much all consistently negative traits and everyone accepting you for being negative.

Tbh the only other thing this comic has beyond these strips is the typical millennial interactions and existentialism humor about how hard it is to exist, how weird it is to exist, and how much we do and don't exist. So if that sort of generic "deep" stuff isn't for you there's just plain nothing fun about this comic. You see a couple internet artists make shit like this you've seen all of it. I don't know what it is about growing up in California and pursuing art that the vast majority of them just feel the need to draw these things over and over. I'm not saying some of it can't be neat and there's no room for it to exist but it also got tiring with Adventure Time getting up its own ass, and then seeing SU do a lot of it and a lot of the crew on those shows' personal doodles and stuff about emotional metaphors and shit about life just gets old.
