I see it a lot like the Taiping Rebellion or the Antiwork subreddit.
The original catalyst, the original founding, is undeniably the work of someone who's absolutely insane. They're so extremely radical that their beliefs are nearly nonsensical and you could make the argument that it's all just a cult. But the movement itself has (or at least, had, back in the age of segregation and black history) a grain of genuine truth to it that starts to attract more reasonable people who have more reasonable grievances. People aren't joining for the insane Yakub shit, they're joining for the community support and messaging around black power.
And as we see, what typically happens in these situations is that the insane leadership and their original vision eventually clashes with and embarrasses the normal members of the organization until they leave, collapsing the whole scheme.
