Most of the people who consume Western animation and comics are guys.

If it is a lesbian pair, then the neckbeard thinks "maybe I can convert one of them?"

I think its more socially conditioned. Like, the male gaze is certainly different from the female gaze, straight or otherwise. But men’s position in society lends more to certain types of gazes being considered the default. As a result, its kind of hard to pinpoint the exact “female” gaze. Anything that could be said to be it is really only defined to how it contrasts to the mainstream “male” gaze. And let’s be honest, the male gaze in more subject to marketable conditions than to anything men typically find attractive. What sells more is more likely to be pushed as more “desirable”

I'd bet it's the low pay and shitty working conditions, when a job really fucking sucks (as in you break your back AND it pays fuck all) it'll generally be done by women, queers and people with two weeks left on their visa. A dude will walk if the job won't let him afford rent, the girl he's simping for and the kid he plans to put in her but a lesbian lives with three roommates and will probably never get pregnant so she has a higher tolerance to poverty.

Pretty much every other gay male I've seen in cartoons has been a stereotypical abomination or some hairy middle aged man, because 90% of the time, the gay dudes are some side character's parents you only see in a few episodes.

A lot of queer people tend to go into the arts and for some reason a lot of them tend to be women from a fairly similar socio-economic background. Also, I think a lot of women who tend to be straight or questioning end up meeting and interacting with queer women in their social networks, which lead to a lot of them considering dating women when they typically wouldn't, especially since a bunch of them have already shared interests.
