The most iconic episode is Stoop Kid for some reason.
There was a period in the 2010s where nobody would shut the fuck up about Stoop Kid whenever Hey Arnold was brought up. When Nick reran Hey Arnold on their 90s block, they milked the fuck out of Stoop Kid every chance they got. This single episode even has t shirts and merchandise referencing it. Itโ€™s
weird because it was never my favorite episode, but it seems like the one that older millennials seemed to like the most.

It's not really cowardice. He was never meant to be suicidal and some stupid YouTube video said otherwise. I'm sure Bartlett, as well as many others working on the show, didn't even think it'd be interpreted as suicide. They were given the opportunity to do The Jungle Movie again after it was first canceled because the 2002 movie bombed, so it gave him the perfect opportunity to dismiss that fan theory.

Authorial intent just trumped your Death of the Author because the author wasn't actually dead yet. Get over it.

I don't even remember the episode but the ending is iconic to me

Hey Arnold was the wokest shit ever yet I liked it. Looking back plenty of cartoons were woke as fuck just like Doug. I feel like Doug is a whinier version of hey Arnold. Why were all cartoon characters so whiny and miserable?
There also is this Vietnam episode with Arnold's neighbour. Really sad.

I'll be honest, she is cute.
For me she is the perfect girl and the kind of girl you have to find.

The cute, LOYAL (why was she so loyal to Helga?), shy, introverted, wallflower Asian girl. You have to find someone like her. She will be loyal to you and eventually she will bloom and the ugly duckling will turn into a beautiful swan. That is the girl you have to get and you were there back then when nobody cared and she was still an ugly duckling.
I once found such an Asian, it lasted for 10 years.

Like a year or two ago some anon went on a detailed breakdown of the pre-digital seasons of Hey Arnold and how the style was based on some kind of actual trend in urban art at the time that gave the show a really unique atmosphere. Something about a colored pencil aesthetic. It looks really fucking good during basically any night or city scape sequence.

Digital coloring really did a terrible number on the animation industry on the whole due to poor training in using the tools and rushing it's adoption. It's even worse in the anime of the era, colors are just piss ugly and everything feels like it has flat lighting. There is something similar to shooting live action on actual film in its similarities to making animation on a physical cel. Obviously animators have mastered digital coloring tools at this point and could likely recreate this style if they wanted, but it still would have that lack of grit or grain to it as it is all digitally processed, nothing tangible.

I gotta be honest. Many stories suck and are woke as fuck BUT this show has peak art direction.
The backgrounds where in a style we had never seen before in a kids cartoon at least I do not remember any backgrounds like this. That coloured pencil stuff is really really iconic and so stands for Hey Arnold. Name any other show with such backgrounds.

Also the choice for the music is iconic as fuck. I really enjoy listening to the credit score. I think plenty of shows are actually lacking good art direction. This show had a good packaging. Also not sure if Hey Arnold has a lot of recurring songs like I know cartoons that use the same 4 silly songs over and over again but I do not recall this in hey arnold. it all seems very fresh and so fucking stylish.

Is phoebe actually Asian or Latina??? Are those her parents?

Anglos do not want to hear this but I prefer the GERMAN dub of Hey Arnold.

First of all ARNOLD's voice changes in the original American version. That is so fucking irritating and off putting- German voice remains the same.

Also in the German dub they talk like kids while Americans of course play it save and won't say any bad words.

For example: Stoop kid.
In the English dub they say
>stoop kid is afraid without his stoop

in the German dub they say:
>stoop kid shits himself without his stoop
I think that is hilarious.
Also they use the word
>geil
a lot which can mean awesome and is a word people will use but since it also means "horney" it is a word I have never ever heard in any other kids show because it isn't really a word kids should be using.

I think it's quite normal to prefer dubs over original versions if we're talking about cartoons/anime from 20+ years ago. In my case Rhonda is one of my favorite characters from Hey Arnold mostly because of the Latin Spanish dub. That spoiled brat tone can't be matched.

So apparently they addressed "real" inner city issues on this show. Did they touch on things like black gang violence, underage pregnancy, prostitution and drug use, or did they conveniently skip those actual real in favor of family-friendly ones?

>Gang violence
Yes, of pretty much every race. Also multiple episodes dealing with this, some more overtly than others. In a pretty early episode Arnold gets tricked into trying to steal shit for a gang because one of them pretends to be his adult friend and uses Arnold's desire to feel mature to manipulate him.
>Underage pregnancy
Probably the only thing the show didn't really cover, the kids were too young for that in any real capacity anyway.
>Prostitution
A few "blink and you'll miss it" nods here and there but no episodes focus on it directly.
>Drug use
Yes, there are multiple episodes that use metaphors for addiction. They never use drugs outright but it's so paper-thin that even as a kid I got it.

Oh to add there are a few episodes where a character gets mugged by adults, like actually get the shit beaten out of them. There was going to be a pedophile character but they felt like that was going too far and ended up writing her into the background. Helga's mom is a chronic drunk and the show doesn't try to hide it at all. One episode is a school shooting metaphor.

Because it's a major problem specifically in the black community. All the major 90s gangs were black. It were exclusively black kids lured and pressured to join them. There are also Latino gangs, but they weren't as active in northern cities in the 90s.

>>149007397
>multicultural and multiracial gangs
>drug use swapped for random addiction
>sex doesn't exist
That's pretty much what I though. And there's a reason the gangs should be portrayed like they are in real life: so kids can actually know what to look out for instead of watching out for a merry band of colorful singing misfits straight out of Michael's "Beat it". Same for drugs, a kid who doesn't know about drugs already won't get it unless told about them and their effect truthfully and directly.

>>149007430
>odd that the muggers are adults
As opposed to what? Most criminals are adults or at least older teens.
>a child predator was deemed too much
lol, that's puritan retardation right here: rather than have a child predator character on the show, we'll spare the kids from such lewd debauchery, so they don't know and fall prey to one IRL.

The Albanian mafia made huge inroads into America in the 90s as the end of the Cold War gave them way easier access to the country. The Italian mafia itself also experiences a resurgence. The Aryan Brotherhood like the other anon mentioned was pretty active then. There were also tons of Latino and Asian gangs crawling about, why do you think those rooftop Koreans were so heavily armed? Portraying gang violence in 90s America as being strictly black is fucking absurd.

The stupid thing about this episode (that's paired with the Iggy episode btw) is that is shoots its message in the head by having the nanny be really overbearing and embarassing Helga in the same way Olga always does, and the show more or less always sides with Helga in that situation

This. I honestly do not understand what lesson authors tried to teach through it because it turned so fast in "submit to nanny or fight for your right to remain you" that only thing I could think of is proportionality of response. Ironically in this episode before escalation it was fucking Helga who at least somewhat tried to reach some middle ground while nanny, despite supposedly being on "righteous" side, pushed forward without any consideration for child opinion whatsoever, even when that child already clearly gone into full antagonism.

But then I guess that episode really shows one thing perfectlly - that children can go to ridicilous lengths(hello, false charges, incidents leading to traumas and deaths and suicide) to restore status quo or revert things in some seemingly unimportant for a grown-up thing and this is why it is so fucking important to communicate with them.

Isn't the pilot episode the one with the countdown to Arnold getting bullied?

I was disappointed at Gerald's lack of presence in the Phoebe fart episode. He could've made the episode a lot better and sweeter. Here's how I would've done it.

When Phoebe farts in the microphone, Gerald, unlike the other kids who laugh at her, gets a weird feeling in his pants. When he sees Phoebe humiliated with no one else persuading her, he mentions to her how he was turned on by it, which gets Phoebe to cheer up and become happy. The episode ends with Gerald and Phoebe laying on the bed alone in the latter's room together, laying on the bed together with Gerald playing with Phoebe's plump bare butt as she repeatedly farts for him, bonding together as a result.

Helga Blabs it All has to be my fav episode. Its not the most deep, or emetional, or well written, but its just 11 minutes are great comedy ending with the funniest scene in the show.

This and the Therapist episode are my favorite Helga ones in the series. But yeah that scene where she drops out from the ceiling right into the middle of all the kids and just silently backs out of the room had me fucking rolling the first time I saw it.

He's a pigeon man anon, he just flew the coop. If he was lemmingman, maybe he'd jump off the building, but pigeons don't just kill themselves.

Arnold's room is so cool, but that shit must get SO hot. He lives in a goddamn greenhouse. It makes that heatwave episode so much worse.

Those colors and style remind me of Freaky Stories, short animations about urban legends that aired on Cartoon Network during commercial breaks.

I loved those stories and some of them were legit spooky.
