He's the only member of the main cast who hasn't been "Rickified". Every other Smith has gradually just become a permutation of Rick, echoing his cynicism, sarcasm, narcissism and sardonicism to the point where they're essentially just lesser versions of him. Jerry, on the other hand, has stayed Jerry and has actually been elevated as a character because of it. It's why he plays off Rick so well in their episodes together - he's the only Smith who's actually distinct from Rick as a character these days, which naturally makes their dynamic a lot more entertaining.

The quality of the show has definitely been irreperably damaged by the writers' baffling decision to make every single character Rick. I'm not entirely sure if they even notice what they've done, but you could basically interchange every non-Rick character besides Jerry in every episode and not have anything change. Every single adventure could just be Rick and either Morty, Summer, Beth or (to a lesser degree) Space Beth and very little would change in terms of dialogue and characterisation.

It's not a meme. Fan sentiment is largely turning in favor of Jerry over Rick. Jerry is a very consistent, reliable, honest person and is the butt of every joke because he's timid by nature. But the show has shown repeatedly that Jerry is ready and willing to go hard whenever he needs to. He's an earnest, well-meaning, bee-keeping man. Rick's just a stupid amoral asswipe who turned the fandom against Jerry just like he did Beth.

Why does this board and the rest of the fandom always defend Beth? That's because it stopped being about Jerry and Rick like 3 minutes in. The episode became about what the merging of their personalities became.

I prefer him this way because Morty past season 2 shifted between baby Rick and Doomer-Coomer willing to blow up orphans for pussy. The first one was boring and annoying and the second one has only been funny twice.

This morty feels like a healthy mix of seasons 1 and 2, and 3. He's able to run errands for Rick, he isn't as freaked out as he used to be and has become accustomed to all the sci-fi hijinks so he's obviously developed a bit, which I think is good and natural. And I think the moralfagging like in the crow and bigfoot episodes also makes him a good contrast to Rick

What kills it is the show's constant need to backtrack. One minute entire season finales are dedicated to Rick treating Morty with compassion, and in the next we find out he apparently doesn't respect him. Like what?
