selling toys puts a chokehold on making any sort of meaningful story. the fact that any 80s toons were remotely passable is a miracle. later cartoons were at least made with the creative process in mind. powerpuff girls made metric tons of merchandise but at least they let craig and co. draw and design the show of their own volition, and not some shadowy cabal of toy executives
