I think he just didn't like the sort of attention and audience (for example, the jak posters) the project was gaining, so he decided to discontinue it for now.
It's a shame. The series has great potential and appeal to a broader audience. While I admire his nationalism and him having principles, he should've known from the start that, realistically, it'd be damn near impossible for him to proceed with this project with only the Dutch audience.

Here's hoping that some day he'll stop being so stubborn, and go back at it again.

The thing is just that Massa very much is a "for the Dutch, by the Dutch" kinda guy due to how much or media caters to Dutch culture and stuff. It's how it is here.
Also, we have 17 million people here and our country has had brought out quite some good animators like Paul Driessen and Michael Dudok de Wit and we even won some Oscars for Best Animated Short Film. But we're also a country that relies on international co-production as we are indeed too small.
