Can we talk about how retarded comic powerscaling is?

Powerscaling itself is retarded at least 80% of the time, the one who wins will always be who the writer wants through wits, a deus ex machina, etc. Etc.

can you even physically reach 1 million decibels? I feel like this would require atoms to vibrate faster than the speed of light which would be impossible

You're trying to apply logic to a genre where you get superpowers from standing in front of a dirty bomb explosion.

I'm just curious about what is the maximum theorical value of decibels that could "exist".
Decibel measure energy but that energy comes from pressure variation in molecules so was curious about what is the max values you could get, since at some level, pressure would turn gas liquid/solid for an instant

I like how powerscaling is the only thing writers are allowed to be sloppy on but if they fuck up historical accuracy, basic science, social political concepts, animal behavior...etc "the writer decides" gets thrown out the window and the reader will lambast them as retarded

animals can definitely get on my nerves when it's messing up something really obvious about the creature. i don't think I have ever seen really strong outrage about historical accuracy in comics.

No it isn't. Without it the dumb thug that shoots at Superman and then tries to punch him when he runs out of bullets would actually KO Superman because we're just ignoring any consistency at all.

This!
>writer is a bad writer because his story conflicts with a random chapter from thirty years
>but it's completely ok to suddenly change or ignore abilities of characters to make the plot work

it's an expression of power (rather than energy) and in original usage is really just a way of explaining a step change between two power levels; in that sense, 1,000,000 decibels is a valid formation - it's just a 1 followed by a hundred thousand zeroes of power greater than 1.259 (the power of one decibel); in that sense it's based on a lot of bullshit guesswork and fudged human-ear measurements because it's an Alexander Graham Bell thing; if power is initially very low then multiplying it by a hundred thousand doesn't necessarily mean much

as a measure of amplitude rather than power and specifically referring in this instance to sound pressure, yes it's insane, like the Flash running even close to as fast as he's said to run that's sufficient energy to break subatomic bonds and cause gamma ray bursts large enough to wipe out all life for light years around

It feels like the only thing keeping a large portion of comic and anime fans reading. It's never about writing or character development, no it's about a character doing something that makes him stronger than most of fiction which then gets him put into normie circles so now that character is seen as the strongest in fiction.

at this point with comics why care about character development at all when the next person to hop on a book is going to do whatever they want no matter how nonsensical

how many times has johnny matured only to be reset to the highschool hothead

Maybe the atoms would vibrate so much that it would give superpowers to anyone exposed to it.

I hate it when I have to turnoff my brain just for the story to "work".

I think it's because powerscaling isn't a critical part of the story most of the time, and can even get in the way at points. Not necessarily the powers themselves, but more specifically how it scales with others.

However, stuff like historical accuracy and social politics can be critical to a story the comic is trying to tell. While sciences and biology just look weird when out of place.

Personally I never care too much, as long as it doesn't become too dumb, but I can see how other people can have a lower tolerance for that kind of thing

A lot of it has to do with pre-internet availability of information. Comic writers wrote by the seat of their pants, would pick up on random terms used in sci-fi films & TV, maybe an occasional article and they would have to go to the library if they wanted to understand any of it. History show they didn't and now it's baked in the cake of capeshit and you either let it slide or become Garth Ennis.

That's actually a smart way to give a character powers
