It's about the temptation to cut yourself off from the world and how selfish it is.
Evangelion is actually very similar to Hayao Miyazaki's films, but Anno is more interested in exploring the sexual aspects. But in terms of philosophy and themes, they're quite aligned. Evangelion is about people inspiring each other to live.
