I got to see this early. AMA. To start off with, here is a plot dump.

>movie begins in a space museum, Elio and his aunt are visiting. His aunt is in line for a promotion at the space base where she works but the death of Elio's parents and his general 'tism keep stopping her from getting it.
>Elio is having a 'tism attack under the table in the museum cafeteria, space is his special interest. He runs off into an exhibit that they are still building about the golden record that was sent into space. Cool visuals ensue as he triggers a display and he learns about the possibility of alien life. His aunt tells him aliens don't exist. Cut to titles.
>Timeskip. Elio is older and is wasting the time he could be spending socialising by trying to attract aliens to abduct him. He skips school to draw circles in the sand and shit to attract them. His aunt is pissed that he isn't growing out of his 'tism and says he needs to make friends.
>Elio gets into an altercation with two other boys, Caleb and Bryce, who also have 'tism about space and radios. During the fight the radio antenna jabs Elio in the eye. Hence the eyepatch.
>On the base, one of the aunt's coworkers claims to be receiving an alien signal. He plays it back for everyone but it's unconvincing so he gets sacked for being 'crazy.' Elio sneaks in later while the room is empty and sends a message to the aliens begging them to come get him. He signs off with 'okay, bye, I love you!' which the aliens misinterpret as a common Earth greeting and it's repeated about fifty times throughout the film. It's not as funny as they probably thought it was.
>Elio's message happens to coincide with the aliens discovering the golden record, and so they assume Elio sent it and that he is the leader of Earth.
>Elio's stunt causes a power outage on the base and the aunt almost loses her job. She loses patience and ships off Elio to boarding school to get his shit together. Caleb and Bryce are also there and make his life hell.

>That night, the bullies chase Elio into the woods and are about to beat him up when time freezes. Very cool visual of the ocean at a standstill. The aliens arrive in a very 80s disco ship and beam Elio up. He is ecstatic.
>The ship's computer is a little blob thing named Oooooo. They give Elio a translator disc so he can talk to all the different alien species.
>Elio is taken to the 'Communiverse' which is basically an intergalactic UN. Lots of other ambassadors are met, none of them super memorable but they look cool.
>Everyone is also super addicted to this weird goopy drink named 'glorp', guarantee you they will be selling it in the parks soon.
>When Elio arrives, an asshole alien named Lord Grigon is moaning that they won't accept him onto the council for being too intolerant and violent. He shoots up some shit, swears vengeance and leaves.
>The aliens are about to send Elio home due to the escalating conflict but he volunteers as the "leader of Earth" to negotiate with Grigon. He goes to an all-knowledgeable space search engine thing and downloads all knowledge about diplomacy to help with this.
>To take Elio's place while he's dealing with this, Ooooo uses 'cloning clay' to create a slightly creepy replica of Elio who goes to Earth and basically acts exactly how the aunt always wanted Elio to act (no longer autistic, clean, sociable).
>Elio meets with Grigon and he wants a shooting match, which Elio bullshits his way through. Then Elio tries diplomacy and finds out Grigon has a son he has a strained relationship with.
>This emotional approach almost works but Elio implies Grigon might be a bad dad which pisses him off and he imprisons Elio.
>Elio slips out of prison (funny visual gag with the bones of other former prisoners) but falls down into a giant spiderweb. He is almost eaten by its occupant but the translator disc lets him talk to the monster.

>This is Glordon, Grigon's son and actually a big softie. He's your standard marketable plushie, but the kid voicing him actually does a really, really good job. Best child performance I have heard in years.
>Elio and Glordon escape. Glordon explains that his dad wants him to take this ceremony where he will be sealed into his carapace battle armour, from which you can't be removed once you're installed and turns you into a killing machine.
>Elio and Glordon dodge a lava flume by hiding Elio in Glordon's mouth. Elio gets the idea to use Glordon as a bargaining chip against Grigon. They go back to the Communiverse, phone up Grigon and tell him to withdraw or they'll kill Glordon (Glordon plays along). Grigon agrees and says he'll be there to collect his son soon.
>In the meantime, we get one of those classic Pixar friendship montages where Elio and Glordon bond. Very cute. They share a moment about feeling isolated, and Glordon admits he doesn't want to do the ceremony but can't tell his dad.
>Grigon arrives to collect his son. Elio gets the idea to use the cloning clay and makes a fake Glordon. The real Glordon hides in an escape pod.
>Grigon believes the fake and does the ceremony there and then, with clone!Glordon being robotized. Very effective scene, quite creepy.
>Grigon is about to leave but then clone!Glordon starts going on about how much he loves killing. Grigon immediately clocks that something is wrong and fucking murders the clone with a headshot.
>Grigon is pissed and summons his troops to nuke the Communiverse. The ambassadors are made to read Elio's mind by Grigon (forgot to mention, one of them can read minds) and they realize he has been lying all along. They eject him to Earth and he lands in the water where they abducted him.

>Meanwhile, the B plot of the film has been the aunt descending into paranoia over this perfect new Elio, gathering notes on him like that It's Always Sunny corkboard meme. It culminates in a bit of body horror when she takes his eyepatch off and he only has one eye, the clone just assumed he only had the one and the eyepatch was part of his physiology.
>She blows off fake Elio and sets up lights to attract the aliens like Elio did at the start. They are revealed to say 'please bring him home.' Super touching. Real Elio finds her and they bond over feeling lost and not knowing what to do.
>Meanwhile, Glordon accidentally triggers the escape pod to go to Earth. He crashes into the base and the military goes apeshit, there's talk of NASA coming to check it out. He starts dying because of Earth's atmosphere.
>Olga (that's the aunt's name) and Elio break into the base using clone!Elio (who is now behaving like a retired actor, very funny) as a distraction. They get into Glordon's pod and fly it into space.
>The ship runs into debris fields which they have no hope of navigating, so Elio radios Caleb to make amends for the fighting. Caleb uses his radio 'tism to contact Olga's disgraced coworker, who in turn contacts people from all over the globe to triangulate the space debris.
>Obligatory scene where Elio realises he was not alone with his space 'tism as all these different nationalities come together to help pilot the ship. They make it through the debris field and hyperspeed to the Communiverse.
>Grigon is still blowing shit up but stops when he sees Glordon dead. He manages to break open his battle armour, hurting himself in the process. He then goes to his son and swaddles him in webbing like a baby, cradles him. Very tender scene.

>Glordon slowly comes back to life, because of fucking course he does. Elio encourages Glordon to tell his dad he doesn't want to do the ceremony, but turns out Grigon already knew but just didn't know how to talk about it. Says he will always love his son regardless.
>The ambassadors offer to let Elio stay as the representative of Earth for real, but he says he never gave Earth a proper shot and decides to leave with his aunt. Cute moment where the translator disc powers off but Elio still understands what Glordon is saying: 'okay, bye, I love you.'
>Back on Earth, Elio makes friends with the other boys and they build radios together. The Communiverse appears in the sky as Elio and Olga look on. The last moment is a message coming in from Glordon over the homemade radio. Credits.

Overall, actually a pretty good film. Miles above Elemental.

Nah, fuck the beanmouth style, that style still exists in modern cartoons since the 2010s and hasnโ€™t gone away like artstyle trends are supposed to. Pixar has used that garbage style for every film thatโ€™s an original IP since Luca, I like it when studios mix up their artstyles, but if you make all have the same 3D beanmouth style, are you really even mixing them up at all?

Honestly by the looks of their upcoming cat film it seems like their moving away from that beanmouth style, theyโ€™ve done great-looking stylized films in the past like The Incredibles and Up which Iโ€™d love to see more of, or maybe make another original film in the classic Pixar artstyle.

It's sticking around due to the fact that animation in the US has become so small and so insular that it's the exact same small group of people working on just about everything. The fact that no new blood could make it into the industry at all over the last 5 years means the same people in charge of every production in 2014 are still in charge of every production now.

Yeah, I genuinely think itโ€™s a really good movie. I havenโ€™t seen a lot of the recent Pixar movies so Iโ€™m not sure how Iโ€™d rank it amongst them. I had some insider knowledge about the rewrites that made me apprehensive, but there arenโ€™t really any obvious seams/plot holes resulting from the movie being reworked. Though if youโ€™re familiar with the original version which was a little darker in tone, itโ€™s pretty transparent that the movie was testing badly before the original director left and Turning Red lady was told by Disney to make it lighter/funnier. Elio himself is really cute.

The one thing I really preferred from the OG trailer was the message to the aliens being due to them intercepting the phone call from Elio to his aunt and misinterpreting: "please come and get me." You know, because he was being bullied at camp. Way more emotional.

That kind of feels like the entire conceit of the film, the clever selling point, and they now had to write around it by making him a total autist.

Yeah, before the original director left (I suspect he was actually kicked off the project but they wonโ€™t say that publicly) the idea was that Elio was scared of aliens and not an autist obsessed with them. They reworked the entire first quarter or so of the movie and trashed a ton of fully animated scenes, the original abduction where heโ€™s scared of aliens is in the OG trailer.

As far as I understand, the story after he actually got to space played out mostly the same way. The director mentioned in the q&a amongst the non-answers to useless kid questions that the first scene of the movie was the last scene made, which is pretty telling when the original trailer is all stuff from the first act. The Okbyeiloveyou repetition is clearly something they wrote around with the new premise and had to make it into a funny catchphrase.

>Monsters Inc.: Buddy comedy
>Finding Nemo: Buddy comedy
>The Incredibles: Superhero movie with buddy comedy elements
>Cars: Buddy comedy
>Ratatouille: Buddy comedy

And so on. You get the picture. It wasn't until the 2010s that people decided every Pixar movie had to be a prestige film. What kid wants to watch films about death or puberty or existentialism or generational trauma?

We need to go back to the '2 niggas just shoot the shit and have an adventure and become friends' formula. Elio sounds like it is doing so.

That's what Onward was but it was still mediocre because it was just Chris Pratt (acting young) and Tom Holland (acting young). I genuinely think people have just forgotten how to make movies with soul. Brad Bird made something as incredible (pun intended) as the Incredibles and then something as terrible as the Incredibles 2. Toy Story just gets worse with each iteration. We've come to a stage where we're lucky if a Disney or Pixar CGI movie is actually good.

https://desuarchive.org/co/thread/148763874/#q148780915
Also looks like the movie came out before the thread was made, on 12th. It's a bunch of nothing, just like the movie itself. Just watch the original Lilo & Stitch, it's the superior "autist kid befriends gay aliens" movie. Luca if you only care about the grubhub shota or Kid Cosmic if you dig how deformed the little boy looks and the movie's anti-fun message. This shit is lame and utterly unoriginal.

Elemental was a piece of shit made by a fat Asian LARPing out the life he never got to live where he got together with a curvy gf and made his immigrant parents proud of him.

Zero relatability, it was just a personal 90 minute wank.

While I have some respect for the movie in other areas, it was indeed a personal story, much like how Turning Red was. And while I don't think personal stories are bad, having them back to back to back (with the exception of Soul & Lightyear, every Pixar movie in the 2020s so far have drawn their main inspiration from someone's specific childhood/experience), so Elio being a bit more general is a good thing imo.

funny thing is, Elio was going to be vaguely autobiographical, too (original director was a lonely child and stopped being lonely when he went to an art college in California, this was his story but with aliens). then the pixar higher-ups looked at how Turning Red and Luca were received and said "Yeah fuck that, let's go back to the normal stories." hence the major rewrites.

The guy being a homo would explain it. And of-fucking-course both of them are ugly.

Then again the bald fuck looks old enough to be the nerd's dad, so maybe that's what he is. Or maybe that's what Pixar wants people to believe after they cut the kiss scene for foreign markets. A dual-purpose ugly bastard. Brilliant, and totally not creepy.

>Pixarโ€™s profit-sharing model, which rewards employees when films hit a certain financial threshold, has also become a source of frustration. Although Inside Out 2 achieved the bonus mark, many workers who were laid off after the filmโ€™s completion wonโ€™t receive it. This is especially disappointing since Pixar promotes bonuses as a key reason for not unionizing with The Animation Guild. "We work all year for that bonus. Itโ€™s part of what makes working at Pixar worth it," said one employee. Another described the decision not to offer bonuses to laid-off workers as "the ultimate slap in the face from Disney."

Back from early screening. OP is not a faggot. Expected to hate the movie (and kind of wanted to for schadenfreude), but it was pretty good. Nothing spectacular, but undoubtedly charming. For reference, I did not like Lightyear/Elemental/Inside Out 2, but did like Luca/Turning Red. I was very happy they didn't portray this as an anime-inspired sparkle dog thing, or have a lot of cringeworthy jabs at half the human characters being military. This interview made me worried.
https://www.animationmagazine.net/2025/06/the-creative-team-of-pixars-elio-explore-the-depths-of-their-animated-space-adventure/

It doesn't hurt the story, but it really feels like a work-in-progress with how side characters and locations appear only to disappear. We all know this movie had a tumultuous production, but damn. Stuff like >>149017088 sticks out where it's very obviously referred to as a military school with brochures and the Air Force aunt saying she used to go here, but then everybody is wearing merit badges and sleeping in campfire tents (also that bully never gets seen again). Like I said, it doesn't really matter to the movie, it's just interesting to be able to peek into a movie without all its fat trimmed off.

Most disappointing thing was the blooper reel not actually showing up at the end. I guess it was just for social media, or maybe it was removed late? Weird. Actual end credit screen is a very awkward teaser for Hoppers, which basically just serves to confirm a throwaway shot of a lizard on a smartphone was an easter egg for an actual character in the next movie.

I'm not sure what the central threat in the original movie would've been. The Brad Garrett alien seemed like a warrior Klingon who was nonetheless part of the team. I like him being more of a villain in this version because Elio as a space hero makes for a more fun movie than Elio as a space tourist.

I think the original would've been more autobiographical, which despite being a punching bag on the internet, I've never minded in nu-Pixar. This one is clearly sanded down to be as universal as possible. No awkward gay metaphors, no dialogue referencing real-world events or politics. I hate to say that it actually makes the movie better to remove all these personal things, but it does. You aren't constantly distracted by how the plot should be a metaphor for something else, you can just get wrapped up in it as a Spielberg-throwback.

If you really want to make the movie funnier, you could interpret the slug kid struggling for his father's acceptance as him trying to convey to his blue collar dad he wants to be an artist. Made funnier because the trade job in this case is a spiky death suit for pillaging and the galactic space hub is a hippy commune.

You could also joke that Elio's skin complexion is the perfect statistical midtone to be noncontroversial to any audience. Not too dark and not too white.

I can't wait for some future Rick and Morty episode where Rick says "Ok Morty listen, we're gonna have to pull an Elio" and then they fake being the leaders of earth or something.

unless you are mixing something with coke (ugh), you're left with those minutemaid lemonaides (which works fine with rum or vodka and even tequila), why? I'd rather just have some edibles.

Why couldn't they just let the pedos cook? All the movies by the Italian faggot exude concentrated pederastic energy anyway, the least they could do is make them look pretty. Now we're stuck with la creatura californiana and a child molester uncle wearing pansexual flag flipped on its ass.

the blooper reel is from the old Adrian Molina version of the movie, you can tell by the costumes and set design. I suspect it'll show up on the bonus features on the bluray or whatever

That's Pixar's thing now, deformed children. I thought the movie was directed by the Luca guy because the characters look so similar but nope. The original director who was kicked off the project actually made Coco, and then Turning Red director and some bitch from calarts took over.

Weird gay kid prancing around in an oversized military uniform and going on a space road trip with goofy evil aliens sounds much better than this boring slop. Your ideas are so shit I'm half certain you're some kind of bot or a Pixar employee.

It pisses me off how every boring rich Californian gets to adapt their life story, but not the one with an actually interesting trauma. The "gay twink in military school" visual is the only good thing to come our of this shitty derivative movie, and of course it's not in the actual movie, replaced with some lame boy scout camp.

I heard somewhere the movie has a Carl Sagan-esque vibe, is there something backing up this claim according to you? Does Elio really return to Earth plain and simple or is there a sense of wonder about what is found out there in the ending and throughout the movie? Like, not just cartoony alien adventures, but how aliens could actually change our lives?

Sure, โ€œvibeโ€. Whoever said that was trying to act smart. The movie is bookended by audio of Sagan narrating.

Even when I watched a good movie, like How do You Live, it felt wrong to watch it alone.
