It really was that "trailer" they released that did the most damage. That effectively poised everything before they could even get more than a few seconds of animation out. And I can't really blame people for reacting the way they did. I genuinely don't know what Crunchyroll was thinking with making that trailer. The show itself is a fairly generic western anime ripoff show thats worst faults are that its extremely bland.
The only thing that really stands out and is why the show gets so much hate is because its a walking billboard for everything people hate about "woke" entertainment. Almost every alphabet person type is represented in it and it feels more like a therapy session for the creator than an actual show.

Slime Boy was outright hilarious at the initial release because there was a clear difference in microphone quality combined with the softspoken nature of his voice.
Parnel highlights a significant running issue with a lot of the characters. Aster basically became the meme messiah of the show because the effort to make the audience hate him gave him a much more clearly defined personality than most of the other side characters we see.
He's an arrogant hormonal idiot trying to live up to the chivalry norms he grew up on while not yet grasping the concept that he's been given bad advice on how to interact with women.
That makes for a genuinely funny screen presence while giving him a clear path towards developing. And I think what amazes me is he became as popular with the people who actually enjoyed it as much as the people who laughed at it, showing he was a clear fan favorite

Unrealistic takes are fine, if we can recognize they are fantasy.
