It really was that "trailer" they released that did the most damage. That effectively poised everything before they could even get more than a few seconds of animation out. Slime Boy was outright hilarious at the initial release because there was a clear difference in microphone quality combined with the softspoken nature of his voice.
Parnel highlights a significant running issue with a lot of the characters. Aster basically became the meme messiah of the show because the effort to make the audience hate him gave him a much more clearly defined personality than most of the other side characters we see.
He's an arrogant hormonal idiot trying to live up to the chivalry norms he grew up on while not yet grasping the concept that he's been given bad advice on how to interact with women.
That makes for a genuinely funny screen presence while giving him a clear path towards developing. And I think what amazes me is he became as popular with the people who actually enjoyed it as much as the people who laughed at it, showing he was a clear fan favorite
