Hot Take: Cars 3 is an underrated, misunderstood and a hidden masterpiece, a movie that goes hard and I will show you and essay of why. Thread

The alternate ending was way better than the theatrical ending. It would have been underrated if it had gone with the other ending.

All of the Cars movies are underrated, misunderstood hidden masterpieces. If I'm lying, then I'm crying.

Cars 2 sucked and I say that as someone that doesn't mind 1 or 3 at all. The spy theme is really jarring and the plot just isn't handled well.

No, that would be Monsters University

It's a structural mess and thrusts an unlikable character into the spotlight.

Mater isn't really unlikable. It's just He's specifically a comic relief character and by structure cannot effectively carry a narrative. No different than when they gave Sheen from Jimmy Neutron his own show.

This, I don't think the other two are "masterpieces" like OP's suggesting but they're fine. 2 is actually outright bad, the first Pixar film I remember just straight up not liking.

Okay well SOME people like him.
I find him barely tolerable.
Cars 2 (with a completely different plot than what we got) should have had 50% as much Mater as the 1st movie.

It went from Good (not great) to mediocre when they refused to have Mater retire at the end. Having him keep racing wasnt a twist or subverting expectations, it just made no narrative sense, felt like his character arc went back to where it started in the film, and just seemed like cowardly writing

Agreed.
It made it seem like an extended episode of a TV show, where the status quo must be maintained at the end.

Cars 3 had an alternate ending? Pixar can stil afford to do those?

I thought the first Cars was a decent movie, but I always thought everything around it felt really artificial. Disney loves the franchise for some reason and it always feels like they try to make it out to be a much bigger and more popular property than it is. I've seen diecast nerds complain about how Cars merch is always clogging the shelves and never seems to go away.

It makes more sense when you find out that Cars 2 was originally intended to be a spin-off featuring Mater
Also >>149033363 it's because they love the merch it sells

I thought Lightning retired to be the new racer girl's coach, the same way Doc was one to him.

Cars was Lasseter's baby and it got over exposed when he was running both Walt Disney Feature Animation and Pixar at the same time.

Honest opinion: Cars 3 is an acceptable film with great visuals but a lackluster story and a terrible ending.

But after the clusterfuck that was Cars 2, Cars 3 was better received than what it really deserved to be.

Storm felt under utilized as an antagonist, all the other rookies really. Them treating Lightning like shit was weird too. Even Lightning was kind of in awe of Strip in the first movie. All the rookie cars in this movie were assholes for no reason.

Ending felt a bit forced. How is it Lightning can start a race, and then let some other car finish it for him. Would felt like that would've been against the rules.

Lightning's crash and recovery could've been a whole movie in it's own. But it felt like they sped through the whole thing.

I definitely wanted more Storm and to learn at least indirectly about how technology progresses in their world. There’s a real hard question in the movie that it sets up but doesn’t answer well. What happens when you factually just aren’t good enough and your prime is behind you? Monsters U addressed that same idea better

Got a friend whose son's first word was "cars" and was obsessed with the film as a toddler. Would have been about 8 or so when this came out and I was like "hey man you wanna fuck up your kid and traumatize him? Watch this"

Other than Cruz taking a heel turn for no reason I do prefer the original ending since Lightning gets to race for Dinoco like he always wanted to, proves he's still got it by winning the race, and still feeling like he's only getting started

I wouldn't call this film underrated but it's certainly eaten a lot of shit it probably didn't deserve for being a sequel to Cars 2 which is a really fucking bad movie.

Cars 2 is not underrated, it’s not flat out terrible but it is nor a great movie, the shift to edgy spy drama is a completely bizarre move that doesn’t fit into the Cars franchise.
