For context, Situationships are a type of relationship in which two people have a relationship (usually a romantic one) with no defined boundaries or limits, as found in a traditional relationship.

As for me, there is a 50/50 chance that Greg and Nikki's relationship would form. However, it is very dependent on their initial interaction with each other.

Greg and Nikki are canonically roughly in the same grade. Greg is currently back in the summer after 8th grade at age 14 (Post–Book 10: Old School retcon, where he should be in high school but isn’t—because Jeff Kinney wants to maintain the status quo).

As for Nikki, after being hospitalized in the last book (Yes, she did get hospitalized), Book 16: Tales from a Not-So-Bratty Little Sister, she is on the verge of entering high school—so technically, she's in the summer after 8th grade at 15 years old.

As for Nate and Amelia's ship, it did supposedly exist sometime around the late 2010s, but nobody bothered to archive it. It sorta randomly reappears when mentioned in the Scholastic Squad wiki shipping section. Since then, I have seen a couple of people mentioning it.

Greg and Nikki are the most archived ship of the bunch, thanks to the abundance of fan art, memes, discussions, and even discourse found on community subreddits and the once-in-a-while Twitter post about the two.

It's not even like Greg isn't capable of character development in the book series. However, it is the status quo issue with Jeff Kinney that causes Greg to be the same.

"Books 5–8 mark a noticeable era in Greg's character development, where he becomes more aware of his actions, experiences humiliation, shows small increasing signs of care and selfishness, and even expresses gratitude."

It's not in a major sense, but it becomes more noticeable after the first four books and throughout the rest of the series.

Book 8: Hard Luck is ending is him sucking up his pride and choosing what truly matters and how to be content with the choice. Greg still makes it clear to the audience that he’s the same selfish and egocentric person, but he’s slowly starting to make better choices and getting better himself.

Unfortunately, starting with Book 9: The Long Haul, Greg's character undergoes flanderization, becoming noticeably dumber and more incompetent—for example, in Old School (Book 10), he doesn’t know what lemonade is made of and needs his mother’s help to put on socks. By Double Down, all the character growth he showed in Hard Luck seems completely undone.

Yes, the character flanderization of Greg is noticeable, but it's played more comedically and not supposed to be taken seriously. However, it does hurt his character, as it undoes whatever lessons he had already learned and moved on from, just for him to regress again.

Old School started with slightly increasing his already dumbness.

Double Down is a full-on character regression with his fixation with popularity, which he moves and learns from Hard Luck. It's not even done that he relapsed but in a different direction. It's character regression for maintaining the status quo.

Nikki is also pretty dumb. Mostly in terms of social awareness, but still dumb. (This is the same girl who ate a cupcake from the trash and tried cooking an actual live, unwashed frog for a gourmet meal for her parents.)

Overall, Greg and Nikki are two halves of a whole idiot. They made for each other.

However, Greg does have a heart for doing the morally right thing when he is guilted, confronted, or emotionally manipulated. Greg can show signs of growth and selfishness, which he usually brushes off when he admits to it.

As for Nikki? She is in a similar boat to Greg, while Nikki is objectively a better person than Greg in a moral consensus. However, Nikki does show signs of self-preservation mainly by embarrassment. Nikki when in a preservation state, things tend to backfire on her slowly but gradually over time until it collapses on her.

Nikki would probably consider the abortion route but it probably backfired on her in some shape or form eventually and she would slowly reluctantly accept the child. Also, Nikki wouldn't have the heart to do something like that despite her situation, even if she considered it.

Again, Greg and Nikki, while very flawed people and characters are good-hearted inside when the right conditions are applied. Therefore Nikki would go and consider the abortion route but ultimately keep the child.

However, Nikki does need a lot of reassurance during this process because she is a person who depends on people's validation.

I should say that while Greg's character and Nikki's analysis does favor of ultimately favor keeping the child at the end after the thoughts of abortion I would say this will not be an easy process for them and both need a push from someone to help them to make the decision despite character growth because how nuanced and complex this process is.

Also, someone should draw this idea with Haruhi being their daughter. I just love how this thread considers and makes Haruhi Suzumiya as their daughter. How ironic for Greg and Nikki eventually to accept their child, just for the child to be an absolute mess of their presumably worst personality traits crank to 11. However, Haruhi is capable of growth and changing ...eventually very slowly but still capable, so it’s not a total loss.
