I genuinely don't understand how people can like characters that pass through so many hands, especially when a lot of them are inevitably diminished or outright ruined.

I mean most comic book characters are judged by a certain "baseline" of characteristics that adhering to = "good writing". All comic characters have bad stories or "OOC" moments at the hands of writers, but you just ignore and dislike those.
It's like if you like Alien and Aliens, you're still a fan of the Alien franchise even if you hate Alien 3
