Is Katara/Zuko the biggest non-canon ship in history in terms of how overwhelmingly popular it is?

Why did it catch on so much? They don't even interact directly outside of a couple episodes, whereas Aang and Katara interacted every single episode. I think even Toph/Sokka had more canon content to work with.

No. For a Nickelodeon show sure, for ATLA most definitely. However outside of that it’s not as big as people think it is and gets mogged by yaoi ships and powerhouses like Draco/Hermione in the fanfiction space (though that could be because of overall franchise popularity).

It’s not about quantity but quality. Every scene that didn’t have them being hostile, worked to show that they do have chemistry and a romance could be formed. Katara and Aang wasted most of its time of them together, either from being mainly one-sided on Aang’s part or characterizes them in a way that shows they’re not good for each other.

Maybe he likes her for how kind and trusting she is, since he lets her touch his scar the moment they had a chance to see a different side to one another. How about Katara being emotionally vulnerable and trusts Zuko enough to share her story of losing her mother in depth, which she has never done in the show to anyone before, not even Jet who she actually has been attracted to on screen. How would she not see positive qualities in someone who doesn’t judge her for feeling rage towards a monster who murdered her mother and lets her make her choices, helping to give her that chance.

I honestly read that anger as more directed towards Iroh rather than Mai since that’s what’s troubling him in that episode. Zuko’s in more turmoil than ever and Iroh isn’t giving him any answers this time around no matter how Zuko tries to appeal to him, so he’s lashing out at any small disturbance.

This is the main reason why a relationship between these two would have a hard time working. They’re both incredibly high-strung melodramatic people and those personalities would inevitably lead to a lot of conflict. This is a fair point, but it is also fair to point out that in one episode Zuko showed himself far more capable of resolving his spats with Katara than Aang ever did. The minute Aang's ideals clashes with her's like in the finally, he either doesn't know how diffuse it or completely loses his head and that serenity goes out the window.

She has never bared her soul like this to any of the boys you mentioned except for Zuko. I don’t see the need to lie when the story shows it to your face. She only makes brief mentions of her losing her mother any other times she brings the subject up, never actually detailing the event, which the flashbacks shows specifically with her sharing the entire event through her eyes with Zuko. She also does this when she was still angry with and hasn’t forgiven him. It’s one thing to do this when they’ve reconciled but another to do it when she still has her walls up around him. This speak volumes to how she trusts him enough to let him in for this when all she could’ve done was kept quiet (which I think at that point she should’ve but she did). Why wouldn’t she see something in him if she lets that happen even when she’s angry at him and of course it only goes uphill after she forgives him.

Honestly, that’s a knock against Zutara if anything. Every other time Katara explained her mother’s death to someone she spared them the gorey details because that wasn’t the point. Every other time she let someone in on this personal tragedy of hers it was to better relate to someone else’s turmoil not vent about herself. The exposition Katara gives Zuko in Southern Raiders reads less like her being vulnerable and more like “I want you to understand just how painful that memory was for me, because I hold you somewhat accountable for it.”

Theres no way to prove this but I was the show's writer, I ship tease various characters just to see who is more popular with the fans while keeping all posibilities open. So at the end of the series, whoever is most popular, I go with it. Katara x Zuko had fans but Katara x Aang had more fans. So the writers went with that. And its not like Zuko was mistreated. He ended up with that other girl. But that's just speculation.
