It's honestly amazing how hard they fumbled this. Picrel was Lower Decks's biggest draw and Kurtzman didn't even know how to milk it properly. They got so extremely lucky with the actors and their natural chemistry, it was one in a million. They finally made a NuTrek show that had people genuinely excited about its characters.

And they fucked it up. With each season they kept deemphasizing the dynamic that made the show work. They gave the main character some random lesbian love interest no one cared about. In an effort to pander to whom exactly? People who didn't even give a shit about the show?

How? How incompetent are you?. It was the easiest W to score. Alex Kurtzman somehow managed fuck up something that should have been a home run. And now NuTrek shows are pretty much all dead and canceled. SNW will limp along for two more seasons and they'll probably drop two seasons of that Academy show before the franchise enters the wilderness years.

Even the runner-up couple Tendi x Rutherford never became real. They had an episode where they scammed the Ferengi by pretending to be a couple and then decided to just be friends who spent all their energy on work. Sit in your wage cage and eat the crickets.

There are retards (mostly dumb millennials) who think that writing stories with a contrarian mindset is somehow good storytelling. No, you're not being clever, you're just doing the opposite of what is expected of you. There's nothing clever about it.
Doing something expected but still making it surprising and satisfying, that's what requires real skill.

I just remember her second guessing the white guy, being generally insufferable, then acknowledging & heeding every word the negro guy said.

Par for the course really, this is what a broken record echo chamber looks like. All streamer services are producing the same formulaic one dimensional crap. Oh, there was also the stereotypical woman fantasy where they went into a bar & all the males were shirtless & built like Arnold Schwarzenegger

I think the nasty double standard in current year /co/ is that it's always the female MC who goes on a "finding myself and fucking random people" character journey. It's never the male MC cucking the female MC. It would be a lot less obvious (and fair) if Boimler had a love interest too.

I was thinking about this the other day
Not necessarily this question specifically but Star Trek in general
Never really cared for it, so perhaps I'm missing something, but when did it become a "mainstream" thing with fifty different series and things being produced at the same time? Always assumed it was more of a niche thing with a new series and couple movies associated with that series every couple years (TNG to DS9 to Voyager) but now it seems all CBS does now is Star Trek. Did this happen during the Paramount days or did it start after the CBS/Viacom split?

Star Trek was always pretty main stream. At least as far as geek shit goes. People in third world shit holes knock Spock. Thing to remember is that while it seems like it there wasn't always such a define. At least insofar as basic media consumption goes. These shows aired and thrived on network television so more than just the mega nerds were watching. You had the big mega fans but people would watch what was on.

Suppose that's true but it seems there's more Star Trek right now than the series perhaps deserves
CBS owns a lot of shit, through a series of mergers and acquisitions (mainly from the old Viacom) they own practically every major television series made before 1973, and a good number of what came after (Gunsmoke, Bonanza, Happy Days, Lucy, Brady Bunch, etc), but they seem content to only do Star Trek. It must make money I assume, and I suppose I wouldn't WANT the current management to touch Gunsmoke judging by some of you guys reactions and my own tastes, but it's something I've noted

I find that very hard to buy. They were the ones who were always together. They were the ones who had the most chemistry. You had an episode of Rutherford overloading his implant's hard drive because he was scared of forgetting her again. If the actors hated it that really doesn't change the writing.

Lower Decks was never the most popular of the nutrek shit on Paramount+ (or even when you check the list of most torrented or otherwise pirated shit from CBS/Paramount). The fucking Big Bang Theory is probably still the most pirated thing from that conglomerate, even if it's a WB Television Studio production.
As far as actual CBS/Paramount crap, Halo is the most torrented thing from 2024 so nothing Star Trek makes the top ten.

Hate to break it to ya but for a lot of โ€œcreativesโ€ itโ€™s just a paycheck. When you have that kind of apathetic nihilist mindset you get dreck like this where they synthesize subversion against tropes and ideas that actually work very well. You only find this type of propagandized nonsense with liberal and leftist people, who want to attack and tear down everything good and heartfelt because they are fundamentally broken psychologically. If you asked a writers room how many people are on medication or visiting therapists itโ€™d probably be 3/4ths. Blame your compatriots for not being responsible.

While this is true, if that aspect of your show is the one thing that brings in constant fan engagement, it becomes rather logical to keep nurturing that aspect. If the chemistry is good, play into it.
But then again, anyone who expected NuTrek not to shit on them was probably retarded. The same writers who ruined Jean-Luc Picard are not going to pander to your little ship, especially if it's straight.

This situation is a bit different from Zutara, because Boimler/Mariner didn't have any real competition. They were the show's main relationship (much like Katara and Aang) and the writers had to invent a bullshit lesbian relationship with a tertiary character to "sink" it. There really was no valid reason for the Boimler/Mariner relationship not to happen.
Well, there was one valid reason. They were afraid of the transgenders throwing a tantrum because NuTrek writers think that they're Star Trek's main demographic now. From what I understand the lesbian relationship was conjured up solely to please that part of the audience. Especially due to pressure from one transgender Star Trek YouTuber who threatened to cover the show if Boimler and Mariner were to hook up.

While the rest of OP rants is typical /pol-tard nonsense, if some idiot doesn't know that you make your point in your first paragraph and then spent the rest of your two or however many paragraphs defending/representing your point, not making fresh points. Picard was probably the most popular of the shows, but SNW easily follows. Discovery just pushed a lot of buttons but at least created some character popular enough to get a sequel movie about them.

Yeah, LD did have it fans, just not enough. Not in comparison to say Futurama or Rick and Morty, to pick two adult animations that are SF/fantasy based.

>But she's not the main character
lmao she totally is. Everything that happens in the show is centered around her, every finale is about her, the show ends with her talking. The other three are just along for the ride.

The first frame was a starfield. You got upset at some stars?

Actually, that checks out for fans more interested in being upset than entertained.

>LD would have been a bigger hit if these two characters had a romance
It's not even that. I doubt it would have been a bigger hit but the point is that the audience was tiny and they still decided to fuck with the audience. The show just reeks of that smug Hollywood superiority complex. There's zero humility here. "Oh, you want this? Fuck you".

I think you'll quickly realize, if you apply any rational thought, is that even in a niche fandom, the crazy shippers just occupy a vocal niche of that niche while everyone else is pretty content. As a fan I really do not feel fucked with because two characters I don't see romantically involved don't get romantically involved.

>Kurtzman
McMahan
The reason this ship was sunk was pure contrarianism from McMahan. He's basically said as much in interviews (among other equally retarded things).
The show was trash and I feel so sorry for Quaid and Newsome because they are genuinely huge Trek fans and I can't imagine landing the lead roles on a Star Trek and winding up locked into this faux Rick and Morty garbage.

It's no big mystery, just read the interviews and McMahan's previous "work" (the fake synopses of nonexistent tng episodes on twitter - they suck)

McMahan is undoubtedly a huge Trek fan, but not of the philosophy or sci-fi aspects. McMahan loves Trek as a crappy soap opera with a sci fi coat of paint. Giving him control was retarded.
Then he built a writer's room full of people that had literally never seen Trek before, on purpose, and failed to act as editorial for them. This led to all the inconsistencies and major fuck ups (like an entire episode hinging on wanting a limited physical good - in fucking Star Trek)
The final puzzle pieces are McMahan's childish contrarianism causing him to actively fuck with whichever fan segment was most vocal and hin actively refusing to cut any ideas that made the writer's room laugh no matter how out-of-place or cruel. That's how we got badgey ripping off space Palestinian heads and an entire episode where the joke is "haha that guy is ace"

That's completely wrong. The only reason that movie got made was because Michelle Yeoh won an Oscar and Kurtzman decided to enact the part of her contract about a limited series or movie. Otherwise it would've just expired when her contract ended. It had nothing to do with how popular her character was.

They should have done a skit making fun of that hilarious refugee propaganda episode of DS9 where the species facing extinction was bitter and angry to be escorted to a paradise planet because they asked for a chunk of someone eles's planet instead and the audience is supposed to feel sorry for them.

But they'd never have the spine.

I'll never understand why they gave her an introductory episode implying she'd be joining the main cast and then opted not to actually have her join the main cast for another season.

Because Kurtzman being the retard he is thought that no one would like the character. Her addition to the cast was basically mandated by the audience.

I hate how for one cool idea they end up shitting the bed on nine other concepts. Such waste of potential, specially since they gone out of their way to keep cucking main pair from being together (with maybe clone Boimler and engineer Mariner possibly becoming an item off screen?).
They should had just given up on doing it as a comedy show and just do a space science adventure that happen to be presented in cartoon format, and they could/create actually interesting alien designs since they aren't limited by irl prosthetic budget.
One thing I really enjoyed was them taking a piss out of the nuTrek movies in the hologram episode.
