It's because bad-faith activists, TOTALLY of their own volition and not spurred on or supported in any way by the Establishment they ultimately benefit, have primed the pump for the last decade or so by making swaths of the public look at any kind of minority representation with suspicion at best and hostility at worst. Now, merely any appearance of a character of a certain trait or identity is enough to ring the same kind of alarm bells as seeing a clearly unwell college student shout cuss words at old folks handing out Bible copies, which you saw on your algorithm feed labeled "Crazy WOKE Activist CRASHOUT #997" or similar. Then in the comic itself, written by different bad-faith activists cut from the same cloth, you see things like entire speech bubbles getting blanked out to support what is (allegedly) the narrative they want you to take away, even though the tactic is so blatant that even the person writing it would have to know how ineffective it is. Counter-effective, even, like a kind of propaganda where you're supposed to take away the opposite of what the surface-level message is. If only there was a snappy term to describe such a thing...
