Why did they drop the artstyle of the first season again? The old designs even had frontal and side views. They worked better in motion. The new designs are 100% flat and stiff. Why would you downgrade the art of your show?

Out of all the 2D characters in the show I think the Watterson's are the only characters (starting with season 2) that can't look directly at the viewer while everyone else can.
So basically it's cheaper to have everything at a fixed angle. Changing the look of the character's themselves from Season 1 to Season 2 was probably done to help mitigate the animation loss they would now suffer.

Gumball was one of CNs most expensive shows to produce. They actually ran out of money during the first season, some entire episodes had to be cut and some of the later episodes of the seasons ended up looking a bit worse as a result (The Fight’s the most noticeable iirc). Had to make some changes without completely dropping the show’s unique art direction

I'm not sure if I have any confirmed sources from the staff but the commonly spread word is that the first season's production was a mess with a lot of the staff being new to animated televison. Ten percent of the original order never saw the light of day, believed by many to be due to the budget going over, and the second season saw a major change in how scripts were done (going from board-driven to script driven) and the studios that handled the animation itself.

Ben himself in 2012 officially said that they had to adapt the season 1 art style to more complex animations.
